  • Canon HG10 HD AVCHD camcorder for $758

    On Amazon.

The quality of this camcorder is pretty darn good as you can see here.

If it only had manual audio level control and recorded in a progressive mode.

Still it is very tempting at this price.

Great camcorder... at a price I wish would have existed when I bought my Sony HDR-UX1 AVCHD camcorder.

Still, my Sony HDR-UX1 is performing very well for me with lots of manual control.

    Love the AVCHD format.

I have eliminated all of my tape-based camcorders.

Now, I'm working with either 8cm mini DVD disc or SD memory card camcorders and I just love them.

    Don't miss tape.

Now the price is up $100. I've noticed that prices on Amazon seem to fluctuate by the hour like stocks! Their margins must be really tight.

A cautionary tale on DVInfo.Net about the Canon HG10 hard disk:

Hi guys, I thought I'd share my experience with the HG10. After reading great reviews of the HG10, I went ahead and ordered it online and received it

Kind of makes you think twice about hard disk recording, doesn't it?

I think I like memory cards best.

Well there are always going to be anecdotal cases of camcorder failures. Unless there is an onslaught of such occurances I'm not concerned about it. I've had quite a few laptops with 2.5" hard drives as well as a Western Digital Passport which is also a 2.5" form factor hard drive and haven't as yet had a problem with any of them. And I've dropped them all a little harder than I care to remember on ocassion.

Who knows how this particular camcorder was handled during shipping?
Who know if the owner or someone in his family accidentally gave it a bump before the heads were parked?

Plus loud clicking noises are a clear sign a drive is heading for the great beyond.
Remember the IBM "Death Star" failures from a few years ago? Well maybe more like 10 years ago.

Of course I would rather have solid state storage on my camcorder but until prices come down from the current $10/GB (or more) I think hard drives are a decent and proven alternative for most applications.
