My Switch To The Mac Still Going Very Well...

This is just a note to those who might be thinking about making that switch to the Mac.

Well, I did just that a few weeks ago.

Man, let me tell you...

...IT'S G-R-E-A-T!!

I still have my Windows XP computer, but the overall user experience on Windows is not even close to the quality experience one gets on the Mac, in my humble opinion.

Here are a few things I've noticed.

1. Boot up on the Mac is soooo much faster. No waiting for the system tray to load and load as it does on Windows XP.

2. Drivers on the Mac seem to be just about perfect; pure plug-and-play.

3. Memory management seems far better on the Mac.

4. Even my Mac mini seems plenty fast for HD.

5. Video software seems much less "buggy" than on Windows XP. It just works.

I can't imagine ever buying another Windows computer after this experience.

Look, Jerry, you have made your point n times and I'm sick and tired of
your rants which just repeat the same thing over and over and over again
on this and other forums. So, will you PLEASE SHUT UP NOW.

It reminds me of TV ads that are repeated so often that they have the
negative effect of turning one away from the product.

Many people are encountering frustration and confusion with Windows-based video editing.

Shouldn't you get off of your high horse and your appalling attempts to censor?

I see no reason for such hypocrisy.

My experience is intended to give as much hope as possible to those who might be searching for a sane alternative to Microsoft and/or an alternative to the endless waiting for Corel to produce the "VideoStudio Pro" vaporware.

Let's have a little tolerance.

After all, I've tolerated you for years.

The other Macintosh application that I'm getting to know is "Garage Band."

A pleasant surprise for video.

"Garage Band" appears to allow you to bring your video clips into a very cool timeline interface where you can adjust video/audio synchronization or match MiniDisc audio with video recorded by a camcorder without an external microphone input... and then you can export to any number of formats.

It also appears to support 24-bit audio recording.

I'm still testing, but -- at this early stage -- I'm very excited about these new software tools.

Hey, I remember the Rainbow Runner.

I don't know many people still using those, but in 2004 I was amazed to learn the Seattle Community Colleges had one in use in a pretty sophisticated media center.

It wasn't being used for video editing, but instead was being used for live encoding, as I recall.

It was cool to see that.

Can you export the "Garage Band" tracks to the most important audio format for doing audio work? That being uncompressed PCM? It would be a shame if Apple locked users into compressed formats.

Mark, yes, it appears I can export without compression.

In Apple "Garage Band," I click SHARE > EXPORT SONG TO DISK.

Next, I see a menu with a single "COMPRESS" check box.

If I don't check this box, I see a message that says "export your song to disk in its original quality."

I can then click the EXPORT button.

Next, I see an EXPORT TO DISK menu with a SAVE button.

I'll give this a try later this week.

Anyway, I can also click GARAGE BAND > PREFERENCES > ADVANCED.

Then I see a drop-down list.

I'm given the option to choose either "GOOD," "BETTER" or "BEST."

When I select "BEST," there's a message that says "audio is recorded and exported at 24-bit quality."

So it would seem the answer is YES!

Will test it all soon.
