So I heard that recording HDV to tape is less compressed that SD therefore tape gives higher quality, plus tape is cheaper, though may suffer from dropouts.
Where SD cards come in handy is that you don't need a capture device such as a tape deck or your own camcorder to capture footage via firewire, you simple pop the SD card in, and copy files quickly and hassle free. but they can be expensive as heck for 8 and 16gig cards.

You are absolutely right. I have checked with my sources at Canon USA and the official answer is that there has been no change to the HDV specification. Like the HV10 and HV20 that came before it, the VIXIA HV30 has a 1920 x 1080 CMOS sensor and is writing HDV at 1440 x 1080 to tape. Hope this puts a wild and inaccurate rumor to rest,

Are you comparing HDV to tape vs. AVCHD to hard disk or Flash? 1080i HDV goes to tape at 25Mbps. Most AVCHD cams record at up to 16Mbps. But the AVCHD codec is more efficient than HDV, MPEG-2 vs MPEG-4. But HDV is a bit more evolved at this point in time. There are opinions on this of course but presently most people are saying the HV20's picture holds up a little better than the HG20's. If you look at Canon's online sample video they both look fantastic. But then again Canon probably edited out any footage that did not show either camera in the best light. It they had just shot some moving water up close and done a few fast pans with both cameras at the same time we would know for sure.

With all this being said I think AVCHD is the future in consumer cameras.
