  • New video editing software?

I've finally upgraded to Windows 7 Pro/64 and (almost) everything works splendidly. I'm even able to play some old Win98 games that weren't even NT compatible.

Problem: my old Adobe Premiere 6.0 won't run on Win7 64 bit. The installer won't even run, not even in the XP virtual machine. It just throws an "incompatible OS" error.

In the virtual XP shell, I can run the executable from my XP partition and it works, but it throws "insufficient memory" errors. If I run the executable in Win7, the preview, timeline, and bin windows don't open. But the Effects window does.

It's a shame, because despite its many shortcomings, I liked Premiere 6.0. It did almost everything I needed (except native mpeg output) and never gave me any trouble.

I can run it ok by booting into XP, but eventually I'm going to want to migrate completely away from XP (although I'll always have an XP machine around). So I guess it's time to upgrade to a newer video editing software and I thought I'd ask what everyone else is using. I've auditioned Premiere Essentials 9, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, and Cyberlink PowerDirector. Didn't care for the timeline scrubbing in Vegas, and I couldn't get the chroma-key to work in PowerDirector. So I'm leaning toward Premiere.

    Opinions? Recommendations?

In the low-cost range, try MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD (30 day free trial) http://www.magix.com/gb/movie-edit-pro/plus/

I've just bought its big brother at http://videopro-x.magix.com/us/ V. 3 is way ahead of anything I tried before (technical features and ease of use) but am still in apprenticeship. I had v. 1.5 before and wasn't over-satisfied, but I missed out on v 2 for health and vision problems. V. 3 is a quantum leap forward
