  • Has anyone tried this avi_io "competitor"?

has anyone tried this free vidcap-tool which doesn't have any avi-limit:

    zap.to/oxen

I haven't tried it, but if you read the web page, you'll notice that it does NOT combine the sound and video into a single AVI file. Apparently you'll have to do this yourself (along with the potential sync problems that accompany it).

Speaking of alternates...has anyone tried this one? I've been having trouble getting it to work with the Matrox Marvel codec. (Warning: it may crash). It looks goo though, and I hope someone might figure out how to get it working...

I'm using VirtualDub strictly for deinterlacing, resizing, cropping, sharpening, and applying other filters as needed to my video. I also have crashes when saving via the Matrox MJPEG codec (it decompresses fine) and end up having to save my AVIs via the Morgan Multimedia codec at 95% quality. (Higher quality settings cause the program to crash.) It seems to do a great job for those tasks.

I did try it briefly for capturing video and found that I lost quite a few more frames than with AVI_IO.
