  • question regarding video capture

OK, I am wondering about something, please forgive my stupidity....

Is a capture card (that has firewirre) required to capture dv with, or can you capture through any firewire port??

I am looking into buying a scsi card that also has a firewire port on it, do I need to have a seperate capture card as well?

Also, this is not relevant to the above question, but pertains to matrox: will there ever be a g400 with more than 32mb of ram??

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Just to point out that Matrox are not compatible with firewire... so you would need a different capture card, unless you go in their video department with the Rt2000... From what I heard, the marvel will only be made available with 16 megs. If you want more you will need to get the G400 + RRG combo...

Firewire is a way PC communicates with firewire devices.
The firewire card is NOT a video capture card. It is more likely a local network card that communicate with ANY firewire capable device, including DV camcorder.
All you need is to check that particular firewire card has drivers and utilities that allow to control camcorder. If they are included, the card is good for video "capture" operation.
My quote means that actually when you use firewire card to record video on PC, the operation is not controlled via common Video for Windows interface. So, it is not a capture, but file transfer.

Some firewire cards such as Canopus DV raptor can communicate only with camcorders. Such limitation is probably good, because the card design is optimized for such operation. Generic firewire may work less reliable with camcorders.
