It's aimed a people who just don't know
much about video and how to edit it.
Have you seen the iMovie software? A
chimp could figure it out.
But I think the fact the iMacs are getting
all this attention is no big deal in
terms of competition for the PC or for
Matrox.
It's still less expensive to use a PC
and a Canopus DV Raptor and get far better
power and performance than you would get
with an iMac. But you have to have the knowledge to install the Raptor and the software, etc., etc. The iMacs are aimed at people who just want to turn the computer on and not have to deal with any installation issues.
But iMac falls short:
A) Matrox is offering "real time"
video editing, which the iMac
does **not** offer
B) DV products have historically been
more plentiful on the PC platform.
That means more software is being
developed for the PC platform.
Ironically, Firewire was an
Apple technology (which insiders
at Apple nearly killed).
Now that Apple has finally gotten around
to using its own technology... it is good
for all of us... even those of us who
prefer to work on the PC platform.
The reason: 1394 and DV will become
just that much more visible and ubiquitous.
That means lower prices and more innovation
in product design. We will all benefit.
