Nevertheless: their graph only illustrates one thing, yours illustrates much more...

Rear curtain sync fires "a little" before the rear curtain is released. That mode usually only works with strobes made by the camera manufacturer, so they know the flash duration, and trigger that much early.
I see, so basically, x time before the rear curtain closes, where x is the flash duration.

I'm not sure when Slow Sync fires. The reason the mode is there is to allow longer exposures with flash for shooting flash illuminated subjects with dark backgrounds (portraits at night).
Yes, it has great use in those cases... BTW, in some modes (IIRC shutterpriority), my D100 doesn't have a slow sync, but calls it a 'slow rear sync'

Isn't slow sync then the same as second curtain flash?

        Nope.

Rear curtain sync is for creating "trails", with a hard image at the end of the exposure (so you get a ghost trail leading up to the main image).

Slow sync refers to the shutter speed, not when the flash goes off. It allows a long (slow) exposure for the background, with the flash used to illuminate the foreground subject.

They *should* pop the flash at the end of the exposure, because it looks better if the hard image is "over" the blur from motion or camera shake .

                Kids from school ?

I can tell you now: it is a suprisingly long wait to watch the battery charge for the first time. You are just sitting there, with the camera in your hands, browsing through the manual, and watching that little orange light blink... on ... off ... on ... Eager to test the camera ... on ... off ... on ... off..., wanting to try things you see in the manual ... on ... off ... on ... off... And all the while you are just gazing through the viewfinder... on ... off... on ... off... Twisting the zoomlens... on ... off ... on ... off ...

BTW, if it is anything like the D100, then the viewfinder will be extremely dark and unsharp when there is no battery in the camera. This is not a malfunction ! (I suspect it has to do with the switchable gridlines and overlayed AF info)...

                        Ouch... sorry to hear that...

My D100 is now showing some signs of wear: the mode-switch button issue (a known issue, in which the mode dial doesn't always register its position properly), but it is still quite rare.

thanks. I'll try to get it repaired (for free, as they promise). a colleague might be able to take it to the netherlands, although the repair needs to be done within less than 10 days, so she can take it back to me. or I could send it to south africa. I don't like the second idea, the risk that the package gets lost is quite high...

I'll wait for the response of the service center in NL.

My Ex's Dimage 7i was broken, Konica-Minolta said they'd fix it out of warranty for free because it was a serial error (the CCDs had some kind of problem). They sent her a replacement camera for the duration of the repair. After a while they told her they couldn't get the replacement parts anymore (which surely has something to do with Konica-Minolta dropping their camera business), but she could buy the (new) replacement cam for a special price: 400 EUR.

Turns out the replacement was a Dynax/Maxxum/Alpha 7D, which still goes for 1000 EUR in stores, and a power brick, neck strap and 256 MB memory card were included as well (along with the usual kit lens, accu, charger, etc.). I've visited them recently and held the camera in hand: It's a dream! This thing is a tank.
