      What it all boils down to is that the resolution is usually marketed as the number of photosites on the sensor. This is somewhat misleading, since there should be fewer color pixels in the resulting image because multiple photosites are required to create a single full-color pixel.

      The main advantage of the Foveon sensors is that they aren't subject to moire. Unfortunately, they haven't increased the resolution of their sensor in 3 years. (In fact, I had a discussion with the president of Foveon about 2 years ago, and he mentioned that they would be going in the other direction - smaller sensors for consumer products rather than larger sensors for profesional products - sad)
