Looking for a new camera - budget of ~ £350

A colleague at work is looking to purchase a new digital camera.
He was looking at the Sony DSC R1 but due to financial contraints was leaning towards the Fuji s9500.

I know nothign about either of these models, but I am sure that you guys could come up with something better for the budget.

Any thoughts?
