  • Bizzare Problem Help.

Just bought an AF-S DX VR ZXoom-Nikkor 18-200 Lense for my Nikon D80.

Had a quick check on the day it arrived in the garden to make sure no dirt was stuck in it etc. Couldn't see any problems.

Took it for a more general test today.

Now heres the strange problem. The camera is set to manual so I set the apature size and shutter speed. AT first I didn't really notice a problem until I noticed that the shutter speed was changing striaght after the shot. So raised and lowered the camera and checked and yes the shutter speed had changed. I took a shot and chekced to see what speed the camera had taken the shot. It had taken it at the speed of 320 which I had set it at. It was now showing 640. I re-adjusted took another shot and this time it reset itself to 100.

The shots came out alright and clearly the anti shake is working.

I've reset the camera back to its defaults and I can't reproduce the error. Had the camera got itself confused some how or is it a bug in the firmware????

    Anyone else heard of this???

sure you set it to fully manual? for me that sounds as if it was set to fixed aperture, but adjusted the exposure time to get a correctly exposed picture. if you raise and lower the camera, ther sensor will pick up different levels of brightness (sky vs. ground) and adjust accordingly.

not sure what the setting is called - on my d70 there are 4 settings on the weel: fully manual, automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority (not sure what's the official name for the last two).

Definatley on Manual setting. You know the M on the Dail.

Resetting the camera seems to have the trick. So either I caught some button or the camera just got plain confused when changing the lense.

Took it out today and it behaved all the time.

The camera probably mistakenly thought you dialled to aperture priority. I wouldn't bother myself with it if it doesn't happen again.

I'm holding my thumbs that this isn't another lemon for you, Pit.

It's hard folding the laundry without using my thumbs though...

Was the camera switched off when you put the lens on the body? (Nikon recommends this)

I suspect it could have been a communication issue with between the lens and body. I had it once (with D100 + 24-85 f/2.8-4, where the camera displayed an aperture of f/35 for a lens that only goes up to f/32.

            Yup the camera was off.

This is what I did to fix it.

Made sure the lense was properly in by reseating it.

Reset the camera to the defaults.

            Bingo it seemed happy.

Hopefully it's not one of those where the problem shows up after prolonged use like my last camera the Dimage A2. Next test next Saturday unless it chucks it down. Rain and Digital camera's don't mix.

I'd say it was a glitch in the software.
But do keep an eye on it (on the D100, the mode dial is one of the first buttons to fail, causing the camera to not always set itself in the mode indicated by the dial).

On mine, this is the case (but on the D100, this switch is also needed to quickly access some settings such as ISO values, focusmode, etc.). I have no intention of getting it fixed (problem is very rare, and the camera is quite old).

Took it out for a spin today and was okay.

One big differance is that the light metering for this lense seems off compaired to the previous lense when the weather is dull. I can adjust for it but it's slight annoyance.
