  • pinhole camera

A collegue of mine makes photos using self-made pinhole camera.
The cameras are homemade from matchboxes, cheese kartons (you know, those flat round boxes in which a 6 or 8 packaged segments of cheese are) and even washing powder packages (those barrel shaped packs). This one was made with his cheesebox-camera:

Other interesting work on his blog:

Cool. It's depressing to think that pinhole photography may become a lost artform as digital photography eventually replaces chemical photography altogether.

Several years ago I saw pinhole photos of Manhatten created by an artist who made a camera of a highrise apartment by lightproofing the apartment, making a pinhole in one of the light-blocked windows, and using a conventional camera to take a time-exposure of the image cast upon the apartment wall. The effect was eerie.

But damned if I can remember the name of the photographer!

Ansel Adams did a lot of beautiful pinhole camera work.

I taught some art and science classes to children part-time at a community center way back when (high school) and one of our projects was to make pinhole cameras.

I've used homemade pinhole cams in the studio several times, some with a "straight" film back and some curved to preserve edge focus. Lots of fun when showing the kids & grandkids how cameras work.
