My Canon S3 IS' zoom mechanism had been gradually getting worse for some time, and finally was making the camera shake like it was about to fall to pieces when it zoomed in and out. It was out of warranty so I figured I'd take it apart partially and see if there was anything I could lubricate to smooth it out. Unfortunately, even after multiple disassembly-lubrication-reassembly cycles it just got worse, occasionally giving an E14 lens error. On the final attempt I decided it was a lost cause and took it completely apart.
I borrowed my dads "ancient" Nikon Coolpix 4300 so I could have a camera until I save up enough for a Panasonic FZ18, and discovered that it takes really nice photos, especially using its hidden raw mode:
