Amazing.. that hasn't been my experience with Seagate at all so far (knock wood). Have an 18GB Cheetah for going on 2 years now in my main machine, and a Barracuda ATA in my other machine. Also used the Barracuda ATA in computers built for friends and at work.. no problems so far (again knocking wood)

Both my main machines cranked out SETI units for months on end 24/7 too.. so the drives were in constant use.

The U series I would not buy. I think they may still use Conner mechanisms, but maybe they have phased those out by now..

Just got an IBM 75GXP.. hope it isn't the junk I'm now hearing that it is..

I had three Cheetahs at one time, got one left. One showed up with some bad sectors, wouldn't boot. Seagate recommended a low level format and said they would replace it if it didn't fix it. That was two years ago, still going.

The 75GXP had some controller chip as well as power connector issues. I have had 4 since last December and so far so good.

SCSI RAID is awesome, especially with the ATTO controllers. Real pricy though.

Every HDD in my house (5 of 'em) are IBM 75GXP's. I had one of the 30Giggers fail. Was a painful experiance since I was not prepared for it. All of the 75GXP's that I have heard about failing seemed to happen within the first 3 or 4 months.

Six months ago I had three customer machines come back with dead Seagate 20GB drives within a week of each other! I was flabbergasted! And they were pissed...

Bottom line is that I have had a HDD from about every manufacturer you can name die at one time or another, but I gotta admit the three Seagate failures pretty much put them at the top of my sh*t list...this after always believing they were quality stuff...
