If you can replace your CPU at a cheap price and get a significant performance boost then by all means do it. It seems that every time I wanted to do this I discovered that the CPU manufacturers had changed the cores and my mobos were suddenly incompatible. I'd usually punt and buy more RAM instead.
I always get hung up on that "price/performance ratio" thing when considering an upgrade and I ultimately end up with a new system. I'm running out of aunts, uncles, and in-laws to sell the old systems to.
