The thing is, I don't _KNOW_ what I did, if anything. It was like this with Win2k, as well. Everyone said it was insecure, and when I went to GRC not only was I invlulnerable, all my ports were STEALTHED.

Now, WinXP is a step backwards, I admit - since my ports were merely closed not stealthed.

But I honestly haven't done anything special... well... ok I did turn off a bunch of services and... hell, now I'm gonna have to friggin' write it down when I reinstall, aren't I?

Seriously, all I did was "sensible" stuff like deactivating all the remote bullshit in XP. Hrm. Maybe that stuff opens up a lot more ports than we all might have thought!

With win2k and no firewall, most of my ports are stealth, some just show closed. Either way, they aren't getting in.

My cable modem ISP is doing its bit!

An access control entry has been put on all the regional webcaches to instantly return a "403 - Access Denied" error on all Code Red Worm probes.

This should reduce the number of Code Red scans made by infected blueyonder customers as they will be blocked by the webcaches.


The webcaches will all be monitored over the next 24 hours.

Thank you Rags, for backing up my assertion. Yes, I know there are specific security vulnerabilities in Win2k. However, the OS all by itself (with a little bit of common sense tweaking) is pretty damn secure. Much moreso than either the Linux geeks or the people who write ZoneAlarm want you to think.

Lately it's been better. Still not as good as it was prior to last week, but the lag is now in the realm of only 2x what I normally see at most servers. The strangest part is that one specific UT server pings the same as it always has for me (35-40ms, when it isn't overloaded with players), while the rest seem to exhibit this lag. I also noticed that two of the servers, which are located on the East Coast (I'm in Chicago now, remember..) are worse than the rest by a margin of about 50% when the lag happens.
