Big Problems with ASUS A7V133A

Well I'm posting this a favor to myself when I take a look at my dad's gaming PC. Since hes had this thing, he's had nothing but problems with it. The Biggest Problem was everytime Windows 98 would boot up it would BOSD with it saying that something about a folder being left open. Then his ZIP drive wouldnt work properly and now after his lastest install, the CD-ROM drive was having problems opening CAB files etc. We thought that it was the CD-ROM drive and replaced it and now its doing the same excact thing with the new drive!

Heres the hardware in it:

ASUS A7V133
1GHz Althon
Western Digital HD on the Promise RAID controller
SB live value (had problems with it during the last reinstall but the BIOS update fixed that)
ATI Radeon Drivers (not sure of the driver verison)

Lastest BIOS
Lastest 4in1 Drivers
Via ZIP patch

I'm not sure of the Placement of the PCI cards or IRQs since I'm at work now posting this.

From the looks of it I'm running into about 2 of the more Common Via southbridge problems with this PC. He's gonna wipe the system one more time (done this 3 times in the past 2 weeks!) and I want to doublecheck everything before he does this plus get some suggestions on correcting the problems that are cropping up.

hmm, have you checked his memory for possible problems?
either try a different stick of ram or you can try memtest86!

Make sure you have the current Promise ATA100 controller drivers installed and/or installed properly.

They can be a little tricky on that board. I have it and have never had a problem with it, except for getting those drivers in right..

Sounds Like

you need to go to Windows Update & install the the Win9x shutdown fix for high speed processors. This is where Windows will actually turn off the machine before the hardware cache in the hard drive finishes up!
