The Pentium 4 could have been much better, and Itanium requires such intensive optimization that it will be on its last legs before much software can take advantage of it. It remains to be seen whether they can bully everyone into accepting IA64..

Of course the P4 will NEVER change ! You know that for a fact or are you just guessing ?

Have you worked with an Itanium system ?

Itanium is brand new and it's EPIC not CISC or RISC so of course it needs new compilers and recompiled programs.But when compilers are in place programs will fly and fly fast on an Itanium system ... that's the whole point in switching to EPIC.
But i'm sure it will prove itself when the 2 generation Itaniums come out.

You really missed the boat on the IA64 stuff. No forcing will be necessary. IA64 is for the same people that run Alphas, or UltraSparcIIIs, or PA-RISC, or Power4. These people need the performance, and will take it on whatever archtecture runs it best (with RAS stuff). Bully? People are already asking for IA64 specifically.


And I have no doubt that intel has a 3.5GHz P4. I can't (errr..won't) comment on their design, but they are a fab-driven company, and they <I>do</I> know how to fab.

Considering the overclockability of the old Celerons a 0.13 Celeron should reach at least 1500 Mhz, quite possibly a lot more.

Nice to see that with one reply i got this tread back from 10 days back to the top, and Paul, thnx for the smokes.. ill try to get one cigar tonight.

I wouldnt count Intel out of the High-End processors so fast than others.. had ALOT of Intel processors and just 2 AMDs.. and with these 2 AMD's i had more problems than all of those intels alltogether.. ( maybe VIA is to blame here, but still... ).

Like a computer expert at my university said... If you want get a rock stable system just go Intel.. they have done business with Microsoft ALOT longer than AMD was selling only couple processors. And thats just a FACT. You get more bang for the buck with AMD, but if the 0.2s difference in excel calc isnt that important..

And maybe even that guy is impressed with AMD, we have one class full of 1G AMD Thunderbirds with our department, but the first one crashed with the first try when i booted it up. ( Btw, these computers were with Matrox G450 cards =)
