  • Tyan Tiger MP... got it!

I received my Tyan Tiger MP MOBO...

In fact, what a nice looking motherboard! I was impressed just by the quality of the board itself! But, who cares?

I put 512 MB Samsung DDR, and slapped in two Duron 750 for the time being... put SBLive! in there, hoping to get it work...

Surprise! After installing Windows XP, everything is working as expected! including SBLive! I was impressed!

I played DVD using WinDVD, and the sound is working fine... I am a happy man! I just have a value edition, and it is not Dolby 5.1 version. So, in terms of getting it to work with 4 or 5 speaker setup, I don't know... But, just by using the driver that came with Windows XP, it is working fine in 2 speaker set up.

I ran 3DMark 2001 yesterday, running 800X600, 32Bit, and the result was not impressive... I got little bit more than 1270. I was looking at the test, and most of the tests are really jerky with G550...

For now, the system is stable, and I am happy with it... However, I was so disappointed to see G550 unable to handle 3DMark 2001 tests, even at 800X600.

Anyways, as I am not really into games, it is fine for me, but it would be nice to see Matrox come up with a kick-ass 3D Graphics adapter SOON!!!

If anyone wants to see the benchmarks, let me know... I will run it, and post the results ASAP.

Glad to see you're happy with it, monocrom.

Gurm, my feelings exactly! I need to pay off these cards before I go filling them up again! It would be so nice to have that board with a pair of new 1.53 GHz Palominos in one of those anodized black aluminum Lian Li cases.. with the window on the side and blue neon inside..

No no, I meant that I promised Julie I'd buy a non-SMP system to replace the dually 700's.

Ah.. well you could just put a single processor in.. for now!

These boards are so inexpensive at the moment, It really looks like you're wasting your money to get anything else! Not to mention how cheap processors and RAM are..

              Damn you.

Now you've made me seriously consider getting this setup (not that I hadn't before...)!

I was kicking around the idea of dual Palominos (or whatever they will call them) in a Tyan Thunder. That would kick butt big time! What would dual 1.5 Palominos be equivalant to in clock speed? I know it wouldn't be double (3 MHz), or would it?

I am still pretty new to all of this so I will most likely be building a more simple system.

Kindness, from what I've seen in tests, some applications actually do double in speed using 760MP. The performance of this chipset comes from the Alpha EV6 bus, which allows each processor an exclusive path to memory, rather than a shared one, as Intel's dual chipsets have always done. It all depends on how well the application is suited to multithreading, though, and how well the coders took advantage of this. Most apps don't double their speed, though.

However, the big boost from multiprocessing comes when you have a million background tasks running, or when you share a pc with your wife under Windows XP and have two or three people logged in at one time... then the CPU load balancing really kicks in and you get the same kind of performance you'd get from a single program running on a single CPU.
