I am having serious problems with sound. XP is final 2600. When HDD is runnind sound is getting slow and distorted. This happens in windows (even first greeting sound is corrupted) and running winamp. I tried to adjust slider for priority in Winamp but it doesnt work. Task manager says winamp is set to realtime priority. I am running last winamp version (3.72). In games I didnot notice that happens(possibly because I have 512 MB RAM). I tried last W2k drivers for SB128 but corruption remains. Before I had W98SE and everything was fine. Any ideas how to fix this really annoying problem? Thanx

I have a similar problem with my SB 128 in win 98SE. The sound gets destorted when i minimise or maximise windows or when i open a long tool bar you can hear a litle sqeak, however it doesnt happen just after retstart as you described , for me this problem appears after few hours of intencive computer usage and music palyning.
I can't precisely put a finger on what is cousing this problem but i think it is something to do with pc resources, because i didnt have that problem when my hardrive was almost emty with windows and few applications.Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (nForce2)>>AMD 2500+@ 3200+ (Barton)>>1.5 GB Ram (PC400)>>Leadtek GF 6800 12x6(385/850)>>Western Digital 120GB (WD1200JB) & Fujitsu 20Gb(MPF3204AT)>>Cambridge Audio azur 540A>>Razer Viper(Mouse)>>V7 V7S20PD 20.1 TFT Monitor>>NEC 3510A>>Lite-ON (40x10)>>Cherry CyMotion>>CanoScan N670U>>Epson Stylus Color 760>>Windows XP (SP2)

No problems here with SB 128 on W2k SP2. Did you use the standard drivers, that come with the OS ? They seem to work better in W2k / XP than aynthing else.

Did you disable ACPI ? SoundBlasters need the ACPI function !

ACPI means "Advanced Configuration Power Interface" and was developped by Microsoft. It is mainly a more sophisticated version of the APM "Advanced Power Management" (look in the upper right corner of your initial boot screen).
Now, if your bios version is from December 1999 or newer, Win2k will install ACPI automatically. Is your bios version older, the OS uses the normal APM functions for power saving.
Check in the properties section od W2k, if you have installed a "Standard PC" (= w/o ACPI) or if the ACPI function is enabled. If not, you might run into problems because I read somewhere, that the SoundBlaster series need the ACPI to work properly on todays operating systems.
Are there any experts out there who can confirm that ?
