    Persistence pays off!

    Wombat, thanks for your offer, but...

    I tried using FDISK one more time and it had me going in circles. I'd try every option to delete the partitions and I would get a message stating that it couldn't delete the partitions while logical drives existed. I would ask it to display the partition information and it would state that no logical drives were defined.

    I then tried the MaxBlast utility from Maxtor and finally success! Worked like a charm. Thanks to everyone who chipped in with their advice.

      Ah yes.
      I seem to recall that FDISK (don't know about ME FDISK though) can't handle logical NTFS drives in extended partitions now that you mention it
      If there had been only one partition it would have worked with FDISK.
