4 out of 5 times, 100Mbit networking isn't where the bottleneck lies.
Maybe So, but my experience is that you don't reach that 12mb/s. If half of that speed is reached consistently I'm a happy camper.

I just wished that network connections could be as fast as HD's. Now THAT would be progress.

Well, I consistently get full bandwidth from a 10baseT connection.

Maybe the timings for 100base-T aren't as tweaked, but you should still see pretty good performance.

And, like I said, You're going to have to wait for the NIC to get the data first.

        Two things:
        What kind of NIC?
You're not using a hub, are you?

I bet he's using a hub. But even if he isn't, it shouldn't matter. I get ABSURD throughput (usually in the 10-12MB/sec. range) off my 100bt connections.

Wonder if it's a shitty NIC?

If it's a realtek, then we can just call it quits and tell him to get a decent card. Some realteks even rely on the processor to do work. Softmodems were bad enough, but softNICs?

Realtek those were crappy network cards that stopped me going above 900mhz.

I don't like how the reviewer reasons. The SMC card is faster than the SOHOware but goes into group three? Ridiculous in my book. So what if the SMC uses the RT8139 chip. He himself reasons that the boards were designed differently. The RT8139 is a perfectly good inexpensive chip. Different manufacturers have varying levels of skill and it shows in the performance of their products.

For me, Realtek cards have been a nightmare.

Also, one thing that I was surprised at was that he didn't look at the pings. A bad network card can add 20-50ms.

I have both the Linksys LNE100TX and SMC cards in my network.

Using the cable modem and a Linksys BEFSR-41 4 port router/switch I can download at about 1450+ kbps on the Linksys systems, but am limited to 800-900 kbps on the SMC systems.

                        Take it FWIW.

Well, actually SMC used to be nice, until they started using Realtek chips.

Much like if Matrox were to start using S3 chips on their boards. Would they still kick ass? HAHAHAHA no.

I'll be recieving a Platinum-version of the Audigy next week for a review.
I have a Live! 1024 right now: so I'm curious.

                                No , I'm not. I've got 2 PC's connected by two 3Com NIC's (3C905B-TX) by crossover cable. I don't even have a hub.
But you're right : 10base/T is more easy to get full bandwith with. With 100base/T that not as obvious.

eg. today I've copied about 1/2 gig of mp3's from one HD to another. This took about 20-30 seconds. Then I copied THE SAME mp3's to my second PC over the network. This took about 8-10 minutes. That's not what I would call fast.
Ok, there MAY be something misconfigured with my network, but I think not. I admit, I have limited knowledge when it comes to networking, and thats why I've had my pc installed by an MCSE. I guess (hope) that that guy knew what he was doing.
