  • Troubleshooting ADSL speeds

    Hi guys,

As some of you know I have ADSL since a week and a half. I took the 1Mbit subscribtion but my speeds have never topped the 100Kilobytes/second that I should be reaching.
My download speed is between 8 kilobytes and 40 kilobytes a second.

Maybe one of you know what I can do extra to the list of things I have done already.

Modem: Alcatel Speed Touch Home (non-ISDN).
    Connection: Ethernet.
    Theoretical speed 1024 kilobits
    Fysical speed: 102.5 kilobytes/sec
    Ethernet NIC: IRQ#10 (alone)
    OS: WinME
All TCP/IP settings checked over with ISP helpdesk.
Latest drivers for the modem installed, latest script from the ISP installed, latest patch for WinME installed.

Ofcourse, those who want to laugh at me: In Win2k I get a download speed of 120 kilobytes/second. Yet I don't want to use Win2k all the time, especially not since some of my games dislike it.

So, what are the options? Anyone out there who knows? I've got multiple friends who have their 512k ADSL and 1Mbit ADSL running with WinME who are quicker than me, and have not much else in setup (but for their Ati cards).

    Jord, at a loss.

Have you tried using the latest drivers for your NIC?

      They are the latest drivers.

      A thing I ommited:
NIC speed set to half-duplex, at 10Mbit as per order from the ISP

        Jorden,
Did you change your RWIN value?
If not, look at the "Tweaks" section of dslreports.com.
        They have sugestions & etc.

        PS Happy belated Birth Day!
PPS Try setting your NIC to Auto Negotiate.
Maybe it can catch Full Duplex to your modem.
Mine can't, so it's not that big of a deal.

To check quickly just goto www.speedguide.net and use their TCP/IP Analyzer... it works good.

They also have patches for all OS's that automatically change your settings to a much better one than MS Default.

            WOOOHOOOO !!!

            Got it guys.

I used the DrTCP019.exe from DSLReports to get to this result

I set it to 290,000 in the TCP receive Window, rebooted and bam
            120K/second at my fingertips

            Jord, at speed.
