Beat me to it, Jammrock!
Actually, if I had $500 to spend, I would get a pair of Phase Technology Teatro 4.5s for $260 and the 6.5 center channel for $225. There you have the three most important speakers right away. Save for awhile and then get the 11.5s (each with a built in powered 10" subwoofer) for the fronts and move the 4.5s to the back. This is an awesome system for the money, and has pleased many clients of mine. The 4.5s will do great as main speakers; in fact, when the rep brought them in and I heard them for the first time, I was truly blown away when he said they were only $260 for a pair.. and I don't get blown away easily.
Never mix and match speaker brands (or even series within brands) if you can help it. If you have some junky old speakers you want to try for surrounds for the time being go ahead, but as Greebe said, it will ruin the real home theater experience for you. You wouldn't buy one brand for the left and one brand for the right speaker now, would you? Same thing.
