Internet Explorer + FTP = Freeze (sometimes)

Many of you have probably experienced this before.

When accessing some slow ftp sites, eg, on the other side of the world, it takes a while for internet explorer to actually login, and until it attempt to login, you cant do anything, internet explorer freezes and you can't even press the stop button. The cursor remains as a hand during this time.

If you can't login at all, the only way to get out this mess is ctrl-alt-del

note, happens with all version of ie, ie: 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, ....

anyone else getting this problem, and any clues on how to fix this so i can press stop button if it doesnt connect?

Go to the "Advanced" tab under Internet Options. Uncheck "Enable folder view for FTP sites," that should do it.

i have always experienced it..

Liquid Snake, i dont see that... im guessing its equivalent to 'use web based ftp' i tried with both on and off, it still gives me problems..

In IE 5.5 sp1 goto Tools, Internet Options, Advanced. Under Browsing, look for Enable folder view for FTP sites. Uncheck it.

Though mine is checked (using Win98) I have no issues (nor have I ever).

try going here, (in IE off course), and see if you get same problem....

btw, i have ie5.0 i dont think it will work to upgrade to ie55 but i guess i need to upgrade anyway.....

I can't load the site, but I can launch another browser window and go on my merry way... and even stop it at will.

How about using an FTP program for sites like that?

Greebe , unfortunately there is no way to distinguish between the 'good' and 'bad' sites..... unless i actually crash internet explorer...

currently, i just copy straight into ftp client.... it doesnt crash internet explorer... but its not fun, especially when all u need is a small file.....

I don't believe the problem is whether the site is good or bad... it's something else entirely.

1. This is a known problem with Internet Explorer. However, although sometimes (as in their new and improved OS'es) I defend MS, they really should be taken out and shot over their failure to fix long-standing known IE bugs.

For example, if you go to a picture site (any picture site) and start doing right-click>save-as over and over you WILL crash IE. It's a memory leak bug.

Or if you start opening up a lot of windows, when you close one it doesn't free up its handles and eventually doing a "open link in new window" takes like 10 minutes and locks up both the old and new windows.

This FTP problem falls into a similiar category - it's done this since IE4 (at least) and probably will until IE9... 'cuz MS don't fix longstanding issues with IE.

Greebe: yes i know there obviously isnt such a thing as a good/bad ftp... what i meant by good is one that i can connect to without trouble, and bad as one that makes internet explorer freeze.... i assumed that most people knew what i meant ?!?

Gurm: The problem is Microsoft have no way of knowing what users want, so they really don't know. It costs $25 for each support request, apparently some people have enough to pay them for support. MS seems to want to profit from everything.

There isn't even a way of reporting bugs to them, which is just plain stupid on their part (They probably know that if they did allow us, they would get an overload of msgs, but still gives them no reason)

I don't use apple, but at least they have forums, so there is some way of communication without emptying your wallet.

And well as far as other OS's, they all have some sort of email/support free-of-charge.
