  • HD Alternatives

In this thread right here i was told that the HD's i chose for my system wont work well as a raid-0 array.

So can anyone name any alternatives, or does anyone know if the problem is fixed by now?

    thanks in advance, topha

I'd use IBM GXP60s if I wanted to do an IDE raid, haven't heard of problems with them in any kind of IDE raid config.

60gxps have plenty of their own problems. They seem to exhibit the same defects as the 75gxps (thankfully my 75gxp has been perfect).

I want to add more drive space, and was quite ready to plunk down $160 for a 60GB 60gxp, but it's not worth the aggravation of losing my data. Especially since it seems that IBM has stopped their cross-shipping program.

I checked the GXP60 in Storage Reviews reliability database, it doesn't look too bad. The Quantum Fireball AS, Maxtor DM 60+ and the WD 400BB fares better though.

Yes, the IBM HDs work perfectly in a RAID system. And since you'll have at least two of them it's a good thing that they're not so noisy. Then they're fast and WERE considered reliable.
The only thing distracting from IBM are the rumors all over the net over lots of defect drives in the last few months - I had one of them going bad as well (1 out of 4 ain't that bad, still....)
