    dns servers

    I have a cable modem and every once in a while (the while is gettng less and less every time) i can only access sites that i have an ip for. Anything with a name only is unreachable for me.

    correct me if i am wrong but this would indicate to me that the dns for my isp is crap. Can i use another one?

    help quick before it goes down again

    You should be able to use any of them... but it's important to have the ones by your provider as these should have the lowest ping times

      i have put those down as alternates in my network settings. Hopefully i wont have to us ehtem too often but there's nothing worse than paying for a CM and not getting any net at all

        Birdy, which cable provider are you with Blueyonder or NTL?

            i'm with NTL for my cable.

            The ICS was for someone elses box, i havent managed to get back over there to try it out again

            I will give you an update when i manage to sort it out. I'm sure it will work somehow, there are loads of people who have it working and even the girl at BT said it will work when he ordered the thing.

                I get this problem occasionally with RoadRunner cable access. I've got a Netgear (I think) router hooked up to my 2000 box. While my roommate doesn't complain about lost net access, I have begun to lose DNS almost regularly, recently.

                By disabling then reenabling my network in 2000 I get DNS back. I'm not sure if this is in any way related to the router or not. I don't think I have any DNS servers specified in my list, though, maybe I should add a couple.

                I know that one day I couldn't get a DHCP license and we had to reboot the router. My roommate didn't have issues that day either.....
