I've RMA'ed a few maxtor's under warrenty and it hasn't been too bad... But user results may vary

I've RMA'ed a pile of Fujitsu 40GB drives in the past month.. just sent off my last batch of 5 of them... most of the ones that failed were made in Thailand.
    AMD Phenom 9650, 8GB, 4x1TB, 2x22 DVD-RW, 2x9600GT, 23.6' ASUS, Vista Ultimate
    AMD X2 7750, 4GB, 1x1TB 2x500, 1x22 DVD-RW, 1x8500GT, 22" Acer, OS X 10.5.8
    Acer 6930G, T6400, 4GB, 500GB, 16", Vista Premium
    Lenovo Ideapad S10e, 2GB, 500GB, 10", OS X 10.5.8

I had a Quantum Bigfoot 1.2 Gb in my Pentium 150Mhz which always worked flawlessly. Quantum´s reputation IMHO is (was) very good. I never saw one fail. Maxtor became a good company recently... 4 years ago I would never buy a Maxtor drive... I own one now. WD drives are also very good. I also own a WD Caviar 4.3Gb which has proven to be very durable and reliable.

But stay well away from Fujitsu and Samsung drives.

Over the years I have seen and handled hundreds of hard disk drives. The worst company I have ever seen is none other than Western Digital. I have seen 2 hard disks fail, and later I saw 3 defected hard disks in a row from different shipments.

I had an IBM scsi Deskstar fail on me once, but in general I'm happy with IBM.
Quanum and Maxtor are two brands that I seem to be lucky with. Not a single failure, including Bigfood HDD.
