    Yes, nice put...
Bose really is terrible. Maybe that has something to do that I like BIG speakers and really hate those subwoofer/satellite systems (they might be appropriate for movies, but for real hifi content...) but stille there are way better subwoofer/satellite combinations than what Bose has to offer.
Still the marketing is great (a bit like Creative/Cambridge in the low-end - great marketing, shit sound)

If you're gonna use satellite systems, go with MK - they've been doin it for over 30 years and since inventing them, they're still the best.

I just got a Yamaha RX-V420 AV amp (one down from the 620 I think you you recommended earlier, KvH).
I've coupled it with a Yamaha YST-SW205 subwoofer and I'm awestruck.
This was a fairly modest investment, I'm very pleased, but you guys are talking mega bucks, is this kit really that good?

Went to store #2 today. Big disappointment! Not a single $50k home theater system With that aside, I would just like to say that full sized Klipsch speakers suck. At least compared to B&W and Phase Technology. I listened to a set of Klipsch RF3's connected to an Integra (Onkyo's high end line) DTR-5.2. Not impressed at all. The Klipsch's had a very harsh, flat sound and the bass was almost none exsistent. Not impressed at all. The ProMedia's sounded better than these, imo.

Then I listened to a Pioneer Elite system driving Definative Technology speakers (?). It was much better than the Integra/Klipsch setup, but still lacked the sonic quality of the Denon/B&W combo. I was even listening to DefTech's high end speaker with the built in 18" subs playing a DVD-audio disc.

This was also the store that sells Marantz locally...unfortunately they did not have any demo units up. They had just gotten in some Marantz SR7200, but it wasn't going up on demo until next week, which is too late. Sorry Marantz fans, but they are out of the running, but not due to their fault. I was very disappointed, especially since Dimitri is a big Marantz.

Very disappointed with store #2. Tomorrow is the final store, #3, that sells Denon's and Phase Technology speakers. Hopefully they will have a better showing than today. After that is the Classe demo at Audio Port

          Dimitri,

If I can afford the Audio Quest cables, I'm going to pick some up to replace my Monsters and Audio Research. AQ is the flagship cable for Audio Port, the guys who sell the $2000-$250 000 systems What model B&W's did you listen to? I wasn't terribly impressed until I heard the CDM 9NT's, and I haven't found a better speaker for the price yet. Sorry about Marantz, maybe next upgrade...

I'm not a huge Marantz fan Jammy. When my Dad was telling me he worked for them in the 70's (possibly 60's ?), I took his word on it that they sucked. But when I went into a store that sold their stuff - I'm talkin about their refrence systems, not their 7200 model type stuff.... I was blown away. For the price, there is nothing I have heard to beat them. They use the same components in their $2k system that they use in their $4 1/2K unit and they sound virtually the same - the cheaper one is just lacking some features and a touch screen remote. Now if I was going to spend that much on a reciever, I highly doubt I'd get a Marantz. Probably a B&K or some such or possibly seperates. What you plan on buying makes little difference to me in terms of my personal preferences. I just hope you find something in your price range (which I've forgotten after reading all this stuff on 215 grand stuff ) that you like.

But I'm just a poor college student who lost his financial aid and am working 3 jobs and in school full time. That limits my reciever to about the 2 grand range....

BTW, I happen to very much agree that Klipsch full sized suck ass. At least imho, especially when hooked up to (I've forgotten the name - it starts with a "P" and sells for over 2grand, but is totally made out of plastic....). ***EDIT*** I believe it was Parasound.....

Personally, the thing I'm really waiting for is being able to really set all my stuff up - i.e.: Move the hell out of my parents house! It's really quite difficult setting up a good sounding ht system in an (regardless what your equipment is) "L" shaped bedroom whose shortest width is about 10'. If anyone wants to see what I've managed to do with it, I'll take pictures, but I will need a place to house them temporarily.

Well the auditioning was really great last night.

I got to hear the B&W Signature 800s via a Krell KPS25sc Playback System, and a balance pair of Krell 650Mc Amps.

I didn't see a price on the KPS25sc Playback system but the Amps were $26,000 for the pair

It was wonderful, but way out of my price range.....LOL
Got to listen to classical, jazz, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons and Dire Straits. I forget what time they finally told me to leave.....LOL

I may end up replacing my Velodyne CT-450 Sub with the B&W ASW-1000 Sub. The Velodyne is great for Home Theater - DVDs and movies but just isn't that good musically.

              Or

              Replace my Rotel RB-985 100W x 5 with their newer RB-1095 200W x 5 channel Amp.

              Paul

Everytime one of these threads gets started I get the BUG to upgrade.....$$$$$$$$$$$$......ROFL!!

                  JAMMROCK IS HAPPY!!!!

Long story real short, I picked up a Denon AVR-3802 and a pair of B&W CDM 9NT's today. I couldn't afford a complete switch to Audio Quest cables, as they are very expensive. I did manage to squeeze in an S-video, digital coax and 2 x 12 ft. bi-wired speaker cables.

Ran the stuff home and hooked the big rig up in about 10 minutes. After spending 5 minutes trying to figure out how to match the digital coax with DVD mode on the Denon and how to get the DVD player to output to digital coax, I put in my test CD's and jammed. It sounds better in my room than it did in the demo room. It sounds wonderful. It sounds awesome. And in case you skipped it before, Jammrock is really HAPPY!!!

So a big thank you goes out to everyone who commented and helped my pick out the system!!!

Back in the fanatasy world, I listened to a $110000 stereo system (not including what the top-of-the-line Audio Quest cables cost to connect them) during the Classe seminar. It obviously sounded significatly better than my new system, but for $110000 I'd rather buy a house. Maybe when I'm a millionaire I'll get one

Just wait till the CDM 9NTs loosen up a bit. Then get the CDM CNT and the CDM 1NTs for the rears

I made my own Bi-Wires for the 9NTs and the Center channel. Makes a bit of a difference. Radio Shack has nice bannana plugs for Bi-Wiring.I did get AudioQuest Interconnects though and they are nice.
What kind of Bi-Wire cables did you get???

                        ALBPM,

To save cash (about $500) I bought the floor models, so they are already broken in. The Denon will take a little time to break in. I figure I'll have it at peak performance in a couple of weeks. Audio Port custom built the cables for me using Audio Quest Type 2 speakers cable, I believe. I didn't ask, but it's damn thick and sounds damn nice! The cable has bare ends on the reciever side with 4 wires meshed together (as the Type 2's have 2 conductors per channel) for pos and neg. On the speaker side the cables are a standard horseshoe connector with two sets of connectors. Each cable pair has a sleeve and there is one more sleeve over the entire assembly.

                        Muad'Dib,

That limits my reciever to about the 2 grand range....
                        -Muad'Dib

I am broke The store is running a 12 month no-interest loan. That gives me 1 year to pay it off. I can afford the payments as-is, but with bonuses, tax refunds and pay raises coming up I'll have it paid off by summertime. My reciever was only $850, the cables were heavily discounted and the B&W's were floor models. If there wasn't the 12 months deal and heavily discounted speakers I would have only bought the reciever.

Congrats, Jammrock! Sounds like a nice system there. When you get ready I would follow Paul's advice there and match those with the CDMCNT center and CDM1NTs or CDMSNT for surrounds. Don't wait too long.

KvH - What's your opinion of the Marantz SR-19EX?
Don't really know as I haven't heard it. Marantz is good by reputation though.
