          Tony,

          Yes. The preferred order is:

          1. Back up your data.

          2. Insert Windows XP Professional CD.

          3. Install, choosing "delete drive C: and reformat using NTFS (quick)".

            ha ha Gurm

            Thanks Gurm. A predictable response.

I need to keep 98SE on my system as some of my work apps need it. I will actually be adding Win2k Pro & XP Pro partitions at some point, but I only have ~10Gig spare atm, so need to find a HDD and/or do some housekeeping.

I think I'm gonna go for
            1. back up - always a good idea
            2. download everything - incase 3 screws up
            3. IE 6
            4. WMP 8
            5. DX8.1
            6. WinXP - to evaluate
            7. Win2k - so when I am 'working from home' I can see what my users are seeing.

Is that ok with you Gurm
            FT.

Hey, don't get all snitty with me. I just replied in (as you noted) a predictable manner.

Although I would challenge you to show me apps that don't run in XP that DO run in 98. Even games. I have yet to find one I couldn't run.

XP does have compatibility modes, you know.

Come on Gurm - I thought you had a sense of humour

As a Senior Computer Officer for a university department, I need to run the software my users may, so I can't get rid completely.

Also, there is one application I use called E-Prime, which is for constructing and performing psychological experiments. This software will not even install unless it detects win98/SE. It does its utmost to provide mili-second accurate timing of responses (a difficult task in any PC).

That said, anyone care to answer the original question in a more direct way?

                Cheers

                T.

I would definitely install IE6 before WMP8... and probably DX8.1 last, since who knows what the first two do to those files.

                  So... IE6, WMP8, DX8.1 - although it probably doesn't matter that much.

                  - Gurm

P.S. I know, I was just playing devil's advocate. And I think you'll find that E-Spline WILL install in WInXP, if you ask XP to pretend that it's 98 whilst the installer is running. But I _DO_ understand why you need to stay with 98... even if it is a horrible fate, worse than death itself.

Say Gurm, did it update from 0810 to 0881 in XP, by you ?

By me it says "DirectX setup has completed succesfully" and it's still at 0810. Both with the 7 mb and the 24mb (multi OS) packs.

                      Admiral,

This release isn't for XP. Of course it didn't update.

There won't BE a release for XP, either. The version of DX8.1 included with XP, despite being build 810, is final. The extra builds after 810 were to add compatibility with non-native OS'es.

WMP 8 isn't out for non-XP users i thought. the latest one we can get is WMP 7.1

is there any benefit for getting DX 8.1 at all for non-DX8 cards?? except to say you have it?
                          no harm, no foul.

                            DrZaius:

Yes, you should always get the latest DirectX. Several reasons:

                            1. Games will soon require it (ALWAYS happens).

                            2. It fixes bugs.

                            3. It runs faster.

                              thanks for the answer Gurm

                              One more issue.
I'm in a LAN with two of my neighbours and ever since I updated to DX 8.1 (they don't want to update yet, not untill some game that uses it gets out) I can't see UT servers made by them nor they can see mine, they can see eachother though.
Does DX 8.1 have some new DirectPlay oiptimizations making it incompatible with previous DX versions ?

Not that I'm aware of, but it's possible. Anyone know anything about this?
