New machine is up and running (sort of)

Well I did it! I got it built and FINALLY got it to post up, with lots of help from Ace (Thanks Ace!) and one well placed hint from Jorden.

It is an Athlon XP1800 with a Gigabyte KT266A motherboard and a VisionTek Geforce3 Ti500.

It is still showing to be running at 1150 MHz. I have to play with the bios and the dipswitches, but I have never done it before so I am hesitant to jump into it. I would like to overclock it a little, but am still studying up on how to do it.


It really rocks from what I have seen so far. Just for kicks I ran the 3D Mark 2000 and it came in at 8519! That is without messing with anything to get the clockspeed up.

Just changed the jumper to 133MHz and ran a 10,500 benchmark!

Congrats man. I finally got my new AXP 1700+ and MSI K7T266Pro2 running properly, after a week of fighting with some IDE issues (bios update fixed it). Damn, this sucker's fast compared to my old P3-600

Got a MSI K7T266 Pro2 (basic version, no Raid, no USB2) / AthlonXP 1700 combo too at Friday and yesterday one of my IBM HDs 'died' (see 'Lots of bad IBM GXPs' thread).
I'm using the latest BIOS.
What IDE issues did you have?

Congrats to your new system, hope you enjoy it.
I'm currently running the standard BIOS settings too, only corrected FSB setting to 133 and disabled the onboard components.

OK I am now officially impressed.

I just played a game of Unreal Tournament with 14 bots, EVERYTHING turned on and on high, listening to MP3's with Windows Media Player with the digital screen saver thingy running in it's window.

I still AVERAGED 76 FPS. This machine ROCKS!

I couldn't get anything on my secondary IDE controller into DMA mode. They would just come up in PIO mode all the time. I found the solution on the msi forums. I had to update to the 3.2 bios, and turn off cpu critical temp in the bios settings. After that, everything worked properly.

I have now put my MSI board into a new case with a new powersupply (Enermax 433 Watt). After running for two days, windows (98SE) gave me several problems / bluescreens yesterday. Did several new installs (starting with format c) and still have no stable system yet.
Using latest BIOS 3.2 too. Loaded standard setup defaults and changed FSB from 100 to 133, disabled onboard sound, gaming port, modem and COM1/COM2 (to free up IRQs). Set pnp-OS to Yes.
Last install was:
boot from Win98 floppy
format c:
start setup from disc (Partition D)
Install Via 4in1
(Tried vers 433 from mobo-CD and 435 final)
Install USB filter
Install G400 latest drivers
Install DX8a
Install SB live
Install NIC for TDSL
Connect to MS Windows Update and install MS Updates
Install HP Deskjet 970Cxi att. via USB

Still the system runs very slow with an unusal high degree of disk activity at startup. Tried several installs with/without VIA Busmaster / IDE miniport driver, but this didn't change anything.
How is your system running?
