  • MSI AMD M/B Based on NForce is Out!!

    Hello Guys,

Anyone thinking of getting it? In an old thread here you all thought nVidia would try to put its video in it. Well what you know it is there but there is also a AGP slot but i dont get what they mean by 2x/4x (1.5V only)? Comments?

As much as I hate VIA, I still think the KT266A+SB Audigy is a much better choice than nForce.

It means that the nForce chipset only supports AGP cards with a signal voltage of 1.5 V (btw, the same restriction applies to Intel's i845 and i850 chipsets). This means that you can't use older graphics cards such as Matrox G200, 3dfx Voodoo x or ATI Rage Fury (which only support 3.3 V AGP voltage) on motherboards with these chipsets.

To avoid that a wrong card is inserted into a "1.5 V only" AGP slot, there is a notch on all cards which support 1.5 V voltage. Other cards shouldn't have this notch so they can't be pushed into the slot, but unfortunately there are some cards out there which have that notch but don't support 1.5 V (for example, early revisions of the Diamond Viper 770). Motherboards with i845 or i850 chipsets may even be damaged by using those cards!

I would go for the KT266A solution especially after reading this
http://www.tomshardware.com/mainboar...126/index.html review of KT266A boards pitted against the first 2 nForce boards ... !

The nForce isn't really my kind of motherboard. I put together fast systems for myself, and the nForce is beaten out by the 266A. The dual-pipe DDR has future potential, but the current AMD architectures can't take advantage of it in a UP configuration. I don't really understand why nVidia is offering it so soon.
The nForce doesn't look to be an awful product. It will certainly be welcome in the value and OEM markets, but those aren't my kind of box.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

The integrated graphics do need the extra bandwidth. It gets much faster. The nForce 420 was designed for that purpose, but when you use a AGP board instead, it's not much faster than a nForce 220.

And one more thing, I never thought VIA could design a memorycontroller like that!!!
