Well I browsed a few forums and so far the to spot any Intel chipsets with the problem. One or two confused users thinking it's a Intel chipset becuase of the processor. Anyone got any links to users having probs with Intel chipsets.

Bleh.
So I go to the beta Detonator 23.10's and the problem goes away. I haven't tried the 23.11's yet, and I don't think I want to. VIA is making noise like you'll have to install the latest 4-in-1's to get this patch, and there's NO ****ING WAY those turds are going on my system ever again.

Because ... going from one set of display drivers to another solved the problem ... even with a patched BIOS !Fear, Makes Wise Men Foolish !

Oh gawd.
If you look around changing drivers hasn't worked for all people they still get the same problem. Other people have found that going back to 12.xx series works for them others going down agp x2. A lot have no problems at all.
What msi have done has turned one the registers off on the northbridge yes the northbridge which isn't the on the nvidia graphics card.
Like I said give me some links to intel users having the same problem.
So it's still a Via problem.

Can't really speak of the new detonator bug (while it seem quite obvious that there's something wrong with it when it does cause that much troubles on various systems (VIA, some Intel, even with DVI displays), but if you want an Intel user that had problems with the Creative SBLive, you can count me in. The random stuttering e.g. when mp3-playing while surfing/scrolling in ANY webbrowser was in fact heavier on my Intel BX system than on my VIA KT133 (O.K., the non-A) and on my VIA KT266 (again non-A), but this might have something to do with the fact that the Intel system only had a 450 MHz CPU. Still simple mp3-playback and webbrowsing should be possible - hell I can do that easily on my Amiga with 50 MHz without ANY problems and even having a raytracer calculating in the background or burning a CDR...
Again to the NVidia detonator: Just imagine ATI had released such a problematic driver: EVERYONE would condemn ATI and noone care about VIA being ONE of the affected chipsets. I guess: facts are nothing, "image" is everything...

Indiana, have you tried a different soundcard in that 450MHz system?
I swapped my Live! for the Santa Cruz, and now I don't get crackles in some situations when cpu load is at 100% (for example when scrolling webpages in IE5 with loads of images on them), though the sound just drops for a split second instead.
Maybe the soundcard has not much to do with this effect??

Funny how people go on about the crackling. If you're using directx 8 under win2k you need to turn off the debugging code because it was left in by Microsoft by mistake. It worked for me and I haven't got any crackling unless I max out the volume control. I never had any crackling under win 98.
Other users also reported an end to freezing in games etc.
Crackling on the dvd player I solved by putting the dvd drive as master on the primary channel and disabled auto detect in the bios. This one a crappy Abit kt133a raid. I did this before I heard about the debugging code of Dx8.

Well for me the occassional hiccup (more a stop in sound than a real crackling) was the only of those "VIA-bugs" and I got it in every machine I had as long as I used the awful combination SBLive and Win2k. No problems with Win98. I did not use DX8 at that time, so no debug-output. And my DVDRom is SCSI....
DZeus, yes I had an other soundcard in that very same machine earlier (an el-cheapo Terratec without any fancy functionality, just plain stereo sound) and didn't have those problems with them. The missing AC3-out with Creative s*cking drivers in Win2k and the low soudquality were enough reason to replace the SBLive Platinum with a Terratec DMX XFire (soon to be a 6Fire, hopefully), and the crackles are gone. Oh yes, and of course AC3 out DOES work in Win2k.Last edited by Indiana; 8 December 2001, 03:02.

Via is out of my book for now. I´ll really try never to get a Via chipset again on future upgrades.
Let´s see my chipset path...
Intel VX - No problems
TXPro (ALI Alladin V)- No problems
Intel BX - No problems
AMD 750 - No problems
Via KT133 - Problems
AMD 750 - No problems
Via KT133A - Problems
SiS 735 - No problems
Does anyone notice a pattern here? Even now I´m getting problems with the KT133A, my Asus A7V133 is on my wife system, and as soon as I added a Sb Live, I had to disable DMA on the CD-Rom, as I´m having severe data corruption on almost everything I try to copy from the CD-Rom to the hard-disk. Sweet, no?
With the ECS board I finnaly have a feeling I was lacking for a whole year: You assemble the system, turn power on, install OS, install latest drivers and everything works as it should. No freezes, no data corruption, no patches, no turn-arounds, no surprises, no tweaking Bios to set AGP to 1X. Great performance, no worries.
I will be looking forward to SiS chipsets, they really seem to got their act togheter with this 735. Unfortunatly few motherboard manufacturers adopted it because some rumored "chipsets shortage threats" from VIA. Lets hope the 745 to be a different story.

Got an Athlon XP 1800+ and an EPOX 8KHA+ with VIA KT266A chipset !
Assembled the system, installed windows 9x/XP installed my SBLive and installed the usual stuff ... been running 24/7 ever since ... no problems, no data corruption, no crashes except when O/C'ing too much !
That's not solid that's ROCK SOLID !!!!!!
Had an P3V4X with VIA Apollo Pro 133A ...
Assembled the system, installed windows 9x installed my SBLive and installed the usual stuff ... been running ever since ... no problems, no data corruption, no crashes except when O/C'ing too much ! and that was with a G200 and a G400 Max.

I've got an Epox 8kha and thats solid but I've seen enougth Via off via chipsets to know that they're not the most stable in the world.
What you got to remember although you haven't had problems enougth people had.

Well it seems Via will be releasing a fix for these Nvidea problems in the next few days. The bad news is that they'll be in the 4 in 1's hopefully Via will seperate the patch out.
In the meantime I recommend they go out and buy a nice Matrox card and look at the pretty desktop without a bsod.

Now that would be interesting but I can't see Intel going for it. How about Amd coming fully into the chipset market.
