  • Complex Virus/Windows Slowdown Problem.

I noticed yesterday that when using IExplorer6 there would be a 4-5 second delay if I would enter text into a search area/message/whatever and hit return...then my Outlook Express mail program was taking 3-4 minutes to open up!

I did a virus check and was surprised I was badly infected with the "PC Weird" and " GR.Kuangm" "ana.exe" virus...I used a couple of different virus kilelr programs and disinfected the system. But when I rebooted Win98 the IE6/Outlook Express delay problem was still there and now other programs if run would also cause a 4-5 sec lag in the operating system (any program from a simple paint prg to a dvd).

I unistalled IE6/Outlook and reinstalled IE5.5 with very little difference.

And to make matters really crappy I cannot boot in Windows XP thru my dual boot at the start up (I get to the WinXP start up screen but then it goes black and my computer reboots in a loop!).

    AAARGH.

So I am now stuck with a SLOWWW Win98se system and no WINXP access.

    Can someone suggest a strategy?

    1) I am planning to reinstall win98se from DOS in a hopeful attempt that WIN98 will copy itself on top of the buggy win98...will this work?

    2) Should I re-install from DOS, or WIN98se OS?

    3) Is it going to kill my access to dual boot at the load up screen?

    4) Will I need to reinstall WIN Xp?

    5) If I reinstall XP should I do it from Win98 or can I even do it form DOS? (sorry I forgot how I did it in the first place as it was a while ago)

    6) Is there a less time-intesive pain in the ass way to make my sytem work like before (I even tried importing earlier versions of my win reg.ini but no joy).

    thank you to anyone

This started happening to me a fdw weeks back and I blew it off as a bug. I then switched ISP's and the problem magically disappeared. I made no changes to any of my programs, just changed my ISP. Since I was setupo for DHCP and the new ISP used the smae name for my mail server and newreader server, I didn't change anything there either. Bottom line is, I think it's a bug with IE6 in XP as I am using XP as well.

        Mr. Cray,

        Does safe mode work?
Do you have a WinXP recovery disk?
Did you install the WinXP <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q216417">recovery console</a>?

fdisk /mbr might be needed, as well as some manual editing of boot.ini.

After you get everything working again,
make sure you <a href="http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/antivirus.htm#protect">turn off the preview pane</a> in Outlook. Also, set these options:
