    Hi!

Well it seems like it's time to upgrade my computer. In an earlier thred I asked for help with choosing a new motherboard and after some nice tips and som looking around on websites I think I will go for the Soyo k7v dragon plus!. It seemes like a smart choice because it has been reported a stable board and it has nice integrated features like sound and lan so I could save some money and sell my sb live player.

For cpu I think I'll go with the athlon xp 1600 which has a nice price/performance ratio and one stick of 256MB crucial memory.

Hopefulle my new radeon 8500 will arrive this or next week so the only problem left will be the choice of harddrive. Maybe a Maxtor or Western Digital....

Please give me your comment on my setup

    Thanx!

          os och oc

          Hi!

I will be using windows xp pro and maybe a little linux...

I don't think I will overclock it that much, probably just the fsb because it seems a little hard to unlock the cpu multiplier.

I'd suggest grabbing 2nd Crucial 256meg stick if using XP... tho that's all I have atm, I can see how having more would be a real benefit (and it's quite inexpensive still)

as far as the HS goes... what you have already mentioned will work fine... if OCing tho it might pay to get a better one

If you using WinXP, go with previous said advice and grab another 256 MB module. I'm running 512 MB RAM and have the pagefile turned off. XP runs like a champ!

If you decide to get a new cooler, run to www.caseetc.com or www.2cooltek.com. They have great coolers for good prices. I like the Alpha cooler, as they work great and are not that expensive, but don't go with the 7000 RPM fans, as they make a crap load of noise. If you want something silent that will still work great, look at the Zalman's solutions. GlobalWin is good as well.

Go with WD or IBM for the HDD. There have been some quality issues with IBM lately, so you may want to grab the WD. If you have cash to burn, grab one of the 100 GB special edition drives

I'm running an XP 1600+ on my Sparkle 300w PS. No problems here running Win2k.

                      harddrive

I think choosing harddrive is a hard part.
Does the size och the drive affect performance? And how about these new ibm 120gxp harddrives?

The 120GXP's are nice but are too new on the market to judge whether they're reliable... specs are great tho (yet pricey).

There have been some issues with the IBM 60 & 75 GXP series HD failing... tho I and many others have them.

Shame we can't just say YES to IBM like we use to

As for harddrive I'd look for either a Seagate Barracuda IV which is really quiet or one of the new Maxtor drives, which is Quantum in everything but the label.

If you're going IDE with the hard drive (I assume that is how you are going), you must choose between Western Digital (part IBM hybrid) or Maxtor (part Quantum hybrid). It's a toss-up right now. Pick the one with the best rebate.
