Dogbert,

1) I don't use Purist or high-end AQ cables, as my system is not good enough to require them, and I am well aware of that. AQ Diamondback's are as high as I go, and they do make a difference when I'm going between my Denon AVR-3802 and Rotel RB-1080. For speaker cable I use bi-wired AQ Type 2+, which is the lowest end AQ speaker cable.

2) ALBPM does have a $10k system and he does have B&W Nautulis speakers. Therefore buying $210 interconnects and high-end speaker cable will make a difference.

3) Polk speakers blow chunks. Nakamichi is the B&O of Japan. Pretty looking equipment, but it is not audiophile grade equipment (more high-end). You pay for the looks, not the sound. I don't know Theta so I can't comment on that.

I used to believe that 12 gauge wire was good enough until I was able to try out some real speaker cables. The difference was like playing the speakers in the cardboard shipping boxes vs taking them out of the box.

So, now my 12 gauge "wire" rhymes with "far" is collecting dust in the garage and I have real "cable" connecting the Amp to the Speakers...LOL


Upgrading the interconnects had more of an effect on the geometry of the soundstage than anything else.
I was basically using "wire" rhymes with "far", for these too. With the cheaper "wire" interconnects the music came directly from the speakers. I would close my eyes while listening and point to each instrument. I would open my eyes and be pointing directly at a speaker.

With the AudioQuest Coral and the Purist interconnects the sound stage expanded both horizontally and vertically. I now end up pointing well to the outside of my left and right front speakers and I noticed that the mid and high range seem to come from above my center speaker. Essentially the soundstage has now filled the 19 ft long wall and 15 ft high ceiling in my living room. And, I am wearing out a spot in middle of our sofa which is the sweetspot

I took back the pair of Coral interconnects and 2 pairs of the Sidewinder inteconnects that I bought and they gave me a full refund to move up to the Purist interconnects.
So, I got 3, 1 meter Purist Elementas for $150.00 !!!!!

They loaned me 3 Purist cables to use until my matching set of three are made.

I never argue with self-proclaimed know-it-alls. Just tell them to go buy it online and leave me the f*** alone. I have neither the time nor the inclination to go looking up evidence for you. I have real hands-on experience with Yamaha's cheaper stuff and they obviously do not have the same quality controls (2 of 4 disc trays in cd changers we got were warped.) I also checked a spec once for the supposedly "identical" receiver.. somehow it was 4 pounds lighter and the power supply rating (as listed on the back) was much lower.

1. HTR-5170 and RX-V795a are A/V receivers, not CD players.

2. There aren't HTR-5170 specs online anymore, just the RX-V795a so how exactly did you verify that they were so different ?

3. I happen to have the HTR-5170 at home so I do know SOMETHING about it.

Shalom Anan ... I think Chuck knows the equipment but he was simply commenting on Yamaha's cheaper products in general. Have you ever inspected the RX-V795 to compare it with your receiver?

1) KvH used the CD players as an example of the difference between Yahmaha's high-end and consumer grade equipment. I.E. the high end stuff has better quality control and better parts.

2) Gee...I wonder how a Yahmaha salesman can get his hands on specs. Maybe because he a) has (had) one in stock and b) still has his sales literature for said model(s). Did you not read the part where I said he sells Yahmaha audio equipment? Every single dealer has detailed literature on every model that goes through thier store and then some.

3) You may own a HTR-5170, but do you own a RX-V795A? Have you compared the two models side by side? Have you compared the detailed specs? Have you listened to see which players have a more detailed and clear sound? We are talking about a comparison between two models, not one particular model.

There could be dozens of differences between the two models that could make a world of difference in sound quality. Specs are not everything, trust me. If that was the case, everyone would own a Denon. Something as small as the brand and type of resistors, chips, transistors and capacitors can change the sound. The quality of the power supply is a huge factor in how well an amp is able to produce sound, thus KvH's comment about the weight and power rating.

We are not trying to be rude, but you're picking a fight with the wrong people. Most of the people that reply to the stereo threads here on MURC are or have been die-hard audiophiles. People who have assembled $10k+ systems. Just be careful of who you pick fights with here on MURC

Well for starters, I'm not picking fights.

If we're talking about picking fights, then after my fights with Father Joel over the G200 fiasco a few years ago, I don't think there has been any debate as big as this one over here. Kruzin and paul are the only names that I remember from that time that I still see here. Haven't seen Maggi here for a long while.
Anyway, what I ment to say is, after my fights with Joel, I'm hard to impress. We have a saying here in Hebrew that goes - "You can't threaten a whore with a dick".

Besides:
1. I have both manuals and I did check their specs, front panel and back panel. They are identical. (by the way, which one is supposed to be higher grade equipment anyway ?)

2. It was sold to me by a Yamaha dealer that is also my friend.

3. Another friend of mine is also a Yamaha dealer

4. Neither of them holds much extra manuals / info / specs about yamaha equipment.

5. I happend to also inquire the Yamaha importer / representative here in Israel about it as well.

6. Do you really want me to go on and on about it ???

Dogbert regardless of what you call it, it is senseless bickering over facts... KvH has already said he doesn't deal with the likes of your "know it all" kind, so why push it? I know exactly what he is refering to as I've seen it many times before... there are high end and low end products and they cannot be claimed to be the same or equal in quality.

And WTF is that BS about your disagreements with Joel from a couple years back have todo with this?! Geesh how lame!

Just because those you deal with don't have the literature anymore is their loss... and yours... to include those here whom you have absolutely no clue about is nothing less than stereotyping. Get real would ya!
