Hard drive "Spin up" noise

    Dunno why the IBM quality control went to hell, but it went everywhere. I've seen posts by owners of drives made in the Phillipines, Taiwan, Hungary and just about all points between.

    As for the PS business: I have a friend that has an Athlon qualified PS in a P4 system and very little extraneous stuff save for his IEEE-1394 and an 80g Maxtor (sec. master) as a video drive.

    His boot drive was a 75GXP and it went royally. He said it sounded like a '72 Vega that overheated

    As for other makers....I'd be VERY careful of Western Digital. They've been sharing technologies and designs with IBM for a couple of years at least.....

      My PS is Intel P4 aproved also...

      Is Cheiftech POS or...??

        Last night the raid failed....
        But I't wasn't the drive that had the "spin" sound....

        It was the other one!?!?!

        That means that I have to get two new drives...
        (there is no way I'm going to continue using the "spin up" drive...)

          Why not try a Seagate.

          Well, my IBM 75GXP (DTLA-307030) isn't faulty yet either...


          But my Seagate Medialist is working great. Has been online last 3-4 years. Still fast and very reliable (a bit noisy).

            Well....
            I have managed to get my hands on two IBM GXP 20GB drives....
            They will have to do untill I get the bad one's recycled...

              Hi,
              otherwise you can try to get the new IBM 120GXP. They have great perfs (currently the best IDE) but it's to soon to talk about their viability...

                I'l probably get me two of those when time come....
                But for now my budget dictates that I use the GXP60 20GB hdd's
                They'l just have to do for a couple of months...

                Hopefully the GXP's will feel the same and "hold Thogheter" for that lenght of time!

                  Changed drives...
                  Everything works great, their faster than the DTLA's..
                  And they have a lover working noise... (normal, healthy noise there is )
                  and when I ran DFT and erased the "bad drive" it ofcourse recovered the sector

                  But I don't trust that drive anymore
                  And I'm not stupid enough to trust the "Spin up" drive either..

                  So I'l be selling the drives that I get back from IBM to some who comes into my shop and asks for a used hdd!

                      Agree with Greebe.

                      Just ask for an RMA, one bad sector is one to many.

                          Sigh... Sigh... Sigh...

                          Did you all think that I was going to sell them to just any body walking in from the street???

                          And you seems to think that I wouldent tell them either??

                          WRONG!!


                          Ofcourse I will RMA them....

                          And the replacement drives will then probably be sold very cheap to on of those people that think that computer equipments are should be handed out free!

                          Those who comes in to the shop and asks how much a hdd costs and then right out says that he can buy it cheaper in Stockholm or at "Elgiganten" (A superstore that sells everything electric and a lot that isn't).

                          After that they ask if I have any used drives(cheap).

                          And a lot of time they have insisted on that they don't care if the drive is slightly faulty or old as long as it is cheap

                          One even got mad at me because I did'nt want to sell him a drive that was bad...

                          But they will be informed that it is "repaired" drives from IBM waranty department!!

                          And that I don't trust them

                          Both these drives that I have replaced are replacements from IBM and one of them has gone bad and the other one sounds like a highspeed saw.

                          And I am not shure that I will get "new" ones...

                          I will probably get two new ones with oranges tags stating "serviceble used parts"

                          And then I won't trust them!!
