You can close ports manually and see which programs are using them with <a href="http://www.ntutility.com/freeware.html">Active Ports</a>. Version 1.2 works with all Windows except XP, where it generates an instant access violation.
If you're using XP, you can bug the <a href="mailto:webmaster@protect-me.com">author</a> for an XP version, use <a href="http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/tdimon.shtml">TDImon</a>, or just type <b>netstat -ao</b>, which displays the PID.
