• XP Annoyance

I'm running XP which has developed one or two annoying little problems I can't seem to fix. First of all windows are not being sized correctly when opening, both browser windows and normal program windows. For example my FTP program opens in a nice little window about 100x100 pixels, browser windows that should open to a specific size all default to a window consuming almost my total desktop. The other problem is I can no longer launch URLS from my email client, IRC client or ICQ. Anyone any ideas how to fix?

The easiest would be to do a system restore, at a timeindex / restorepoint prior to when you first noticed the problem.
(Only needed on the C drive I guess ... which BTW is the only drive I have set up to be monitored by system Restore)

This approch have worked for me a couple of times.

It would seem Win XP loves to do these sort of things ... let's hope t it will be fixed in SP1.

One of two reasons I'm back in W2K, the other being that I'm using an ATI board for the moment.

C'mon M.

What's wrong with ATI under WinXP. I'm running an ATI Radeon 7200. No problems at all.

Radeon 8500 uses different drivers if I remember things correctly!

Well I've at least fixed my windows sizing problem, it was somehow related to Matrox Quickdesk. I solved the problem by enabling automatic saving of window positions in Quickdesk. I dunno, it's fixed that's all I care about. Now if only I could solve the problem of the non launching URLs...

Hi Ant,

other problem is I can no longer launch URLS from my email client, IRC client or ICQ. Anyone any ideas how to fix?

Had this problem once.
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options
and sort by File Type. Now scroll to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol.

Click Advanced, then Edit, and make sure your URL file type settings match mine below. (screenshot)

Nope. The drivers are the same - except that some of the newer (and better) drivers only support the 8500 (officially, that is).

I actually own a 7500. I was supposed to get a 8500, but my budget, aswell as hopes for a new board from M eventually directed me to the 7500.

I found the drivers to be "buggier" in my system in XP than in 2K. Actually I'm surprised how stable the drivers are in 2K, the drivers handle everything I throw at it and the card still goes strong after 2 weeks not causing me any trouble. I haven't run into problems that have plagued other ATI users, like the refresh rate bug or anything like that, I have however tweaked my system as much as can. Did I say they are faster in 2k. BTW I use the 6011 drivers.

One bug that bothers me though is that the anisotropic filtering doesn't work in these sets of drivers, however there should be a fix available. But then again I don't play games much so it doesn't bother me.

Being a first time ATI user, I'm actually positively surprised.

Ditto here. Win2k, 6011 drivers (the 3286 are stable as well) and Radeon8500. No probs...
For the anisotropic filtering: have you tried the "D3Daniso.exe" that's available somewhere over the net: costs a bit performance (not too much) but does wonders to the quality.
(If you can't find the tool, I can send it to you or load it to my webspace and put up a link).

I did a quick search, but couldn't find it. The admin over at the rage3d forums has disabled the search engine.

If it was working then it would probably been a piece of cake.

I put it up here.

I don't know if it works with EVERY driver revision, though.

EDIT: Looks like there's a new version, that fixes probs with setting the anisotropic in OGL and some newer drivers.
