The thing is, Gurm has spouted like that for as long as I can remember about internet security, even before XP. I'm looking forward to his advice

Having a teensy bit of trouble locking down the RPC ports. Can't for the life of me remember what I did before to turn them off. Got all the others closed though. ;-)

              A little off topic, but...

Has anyone here ever tried to uninstall a network interface card BEFORE uninstalling ZoneAlarm? Let me tell you, what a problem that creates! If you've done it, you know what I mean!

                hmm .... haven't done that !

But I have tried installing ZA before installing any kind of NIC interface and it went smooth !

I have also tried to remove all protocols and network adaptors without any problems ! I simply shut down ZA before doing so and after a re-boot ZA didn't complaint about anything.

Here's what else I turn off that I can think of:

                          - Automatic updates
                          - Remote registry (service)
                          - Remote desktop

Any service that looks like it talks to the network but isn't necessary for TCP/IP.

I have also just installed XP.
I followed the above and found that only my RPC port was open... according to Mr. Gibson, it is impossible to close this port. Is this true?

It's not "imposible" but not easy.....
I know how to do it on W98, but not on Wxp....
I do know how to close it on any MS OS:
Use Zonealarm (sorry coulden't help me )

Running the builtin XP firewall will close this port. I used to have it closed under XP. I'm still working on this (despite a machine rebuild the other day, and some serious hardware difficulties).
