Well I got my new email set up though Comcast but on the 3-step Guide its telling me that I need to DL Comcast's Software so that my User name is reserved. Do I really need to run this program or what? I would rather keep off any crapware they are trying to put on my PC.

I found a more detailed answer to your question:

What information is collected during the install process?
A. The installation agent collects and sends to Cox the following technical
data during the install:
a.. Registration Date/Time and the total install time

b.. Version of the installation software

c.. NIC Mac Address and the IP address

d.. Operating system type and version, total free hard drive space, amount
of RAM installed, NIC driver, number of CPUs and their speed

e.. Default gateway, POP and SMTP server settings.

There is never any required software for Road Runner or Cox. Let me add a
little more info:

"It is important to note that information gathered during the registration
process is only used to create and troubleshoot your account in the unlikely
event you have a problem."

"You should know that it is the policy of Cox not to sell or rent your
personally identifiable information to any third party. Moreover, the Cable
Act prohibits Cox from disclosing personally identifiable information about
you to third parties, except under certain limited circumstances. Cox may
disclose personally identifiable information about you to third parties:
1.. When we have your consent to share the information;
2.. To comply with court orders or applicable laws; or
3.. When we need to share your information to provide a product or service
you have requested (unless we notify you otherwise, these companies are
prohibited from using or disclosing your information beyond what is
necessary to facilitate the delivery of the product or service to you). "
That is all that is covered.

I just got my letter too.......

I think all we need to do is get the addresses for the mail servers.

I don't want to have to install the Comcast crapware either.

So, anyone know how to get the mail servers addresses ??????

Ok, I setup the new mail servers but it won't accept the password they gave me.....LOL

I'm just using Nutscrape mail at home but I don't want that Comcast software. It seems that you have to use their software to reserve your user name etc..

Anyone figured a way around this yet????

DOH!!!!!!!!!!

Problem solved by emailing customer support and getting an email copy of the Letter. The FONT used in the hard copy letter was the problem. I could not distinguish between and I and a 1 and still have to play around and see if what looks like an O is a 0(zero).

I just copied the password from the email version and all is good

I experimented with IE/Outlook Express first and got that work then tried it on Nutscrape mail and that works now.

All I did to resolve the DNS was to do an IP release and IP renew from the command prompt in Win2K;

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

ipconfig alone will list the setup and list your Host name

The Host name is important if you use a router. When we switched from RoadRunner to Comcast I used comcast.net for the Host and it worked.

Comcast changed this when they went to local Hosts. Now they're using local Host names, so that's something call about. When they changed us to a local Host name it was *TOTALLY* non-intuitive.

As far as setting up the rest of Windows all I had to do was change my email & news accounts to use the username and PW on the Comcast installation guide.
