  • Computers are weird no.2

For a month my printer has been flashing it's low ink light. Anyway it decided it had run out so I took out the cartedges and they were full. Put them back in and low and behold the printer decided it had ink. However the printer queue was bollocked.
The bad news I couldn't delete the job. Pissed off I switched off and on hoping for the option to cancel the print job on reboot. Nope it wanted carry on printing garbage and you can't cancel the job laugths the XP machine.
A quick hunt for the todays temp files finally kills the print job and err seti as well. Seti now has the big sulk on. Can't be arsed to sus this out but finally got the print out finnished properly.
Still another bug in XP come Microshaft get the service pack out.

Well the real question is where does XP store the print job so I can manually delete the bugger when all else fails.

          PIT,

I can´t quite understand your problem. Don´t you get the printer icon in the taskbar? I always do, and double clicking it opens the window where you under "file" can stop the printjobs. Just like in win98, and then there´s always the control panel to get to the printer.

It´s the same whether you use Epson, HP LaserJet or Deskjet and I assume it goes for whatever printer you have.

(I don´t use the Fischer-Price look, I don´t know if this beautiful (yuck) interface in the usual "helpful" MS way covers things up).

            Pretty simple really.
            Start long print job.
Printer throws an error half into the job.
            Printer has to be reset.
Go to the system tray and cancel printing job.
            The job doesn't delete.
Try resuming job in the hope that it isn't screwed up just get garbage printed.
Switch off printer and shut down windows xp
Reboot XP and switch printer on.
Garbage resumes from printer printer icon re-appears in systray.
Try cancel printer job cannot do so.
            Switch of printer.
Search for all tmp files and deleted the ones created on same day.
Printer spooler crashes and the print job is finally cleared.
Note I'm logged on as Admin.

Under 98 theres a major differance when you restart it asks whether you want to continue or not under XP it doesn't ask.

                Well,
this I haven´t experienced so I don´t have much to say but I would try to borrow another make of printer to see if the problem remains, I mean it could be the printer or the drivers.

I´d check if some printer monitoring service or program gets automatically started upon boot, some drivers install such. Disabling it could at least let you reboot without starting the gabage printing again.

Disconnecting and uninstalling the device for a fresh reinstall could help, but I take it you´ve tried this.

Now I´m just babbling away, I really don´t have a clue

The printers fine but it had decided it had run out of ink halfway through. It hadn't and a quick shake of the cartride made it decide that the ink was full again. Since then it's worked fine however being unable to delete the job was a major pain in the ass.
