  • Sell my radeon 8500 and buy a Geforce4 Ti?

    Hi!

It seems like the geforce 4 could be a really great card. Seemed like the"dualhead" capabilities were on par with matrox. And if the 2d is much better than before...
So should I try to sell my ati radeon 8500, that isn't capable of showing a video in a window on the monitor and at the same time fullscreen on the tv, and buy a geforce 4 ti instead?

Have a look here before you buy a GeFart:

You could try how it works and post your experiences...
    main system: P4 Northwood 2.0 @ 2.5GHz, Asus P4PE (LAN + Audio onboard), 512MB Infineon PC333 CL2.5, Sapphire/BBA Radeon 9500@9700 128MB (hardmodded), IBM 100GB ATA-100, 17" Belinea (crappy), and some other toys...ADSL (1,5mbit/s down, 256kbit/s up...sweeeeeet!)

I recently bowed my head and caved in... I'm now looking at the world through a GF2mx400. And while it isn't quite as crisp (I can still take it back for a GF2ti or a GF3ti/200) all the WinXP functions are hardware accelerated, I never ever get a bluescreen, and Wolfenstein looks a hell of a lot better (can you say "unsupported features" - I mean, there are literally colors and effects in here that the Kyro2 just DOESN'T DO).

Has anyone had any experience with the capacitor clipping technique to get slightly crisper output out of this bad boy? Can you give me a definitive "yeah go for it" or "don't do that, you'll farg the board"?

          Gurm,

instead of clipping you can use a tiny soldering iron to heat one end of the capĀ“s and bend them up to the point where they make no contact. Then itĀ“s easy to resolder them, if need be.

Seems like the Ti4200 will be a good buy when it comes out. Hopefully I will be able to get it for less than Ā£200.

Now, where did that link that showed which caps it was go to...

rubank, if you heat up an smd component like these only on one end and bend up you'll effectively disconnect the component from the circuit, but also rip the other pad off the pcb. It would be better to completely remove (desolder) the part.

Jason, the cap makes up a low pass filter network. By taking the cap out of circuit not only improves the high frequency responce, but would also reduce the phase shift induced into the signal.

just read that the geforce 4 ti -series doesn't have a built in tv-encoder only the mx-serie has that...
So maybe they aren't as good as it first seemed...

                      Greebe,

in my humble experience enough heat will pass through the smd to soften the solder on the other side so it will not tear away from the pcb.

                      It has worked for me.

and in my experience to tell somebody whom doesn't have the experience to do that is irresponcible.

Yes there are thousands... but without a gaming solution (or rather a card that'll do 3D like the competition) we're left with going over to the darkside.

So, do you think Anands suggestion of clipping the capĀ“s with pliers - thereby irrevocably destroying them - is more responsible?
