  • G400dhm.sys bluescreen

In Windows XP I get a nice blue halt screen caused by G400dhm.sys when I try to view realplayer flicks and also with a number of other mpeg/avi display programs. This is with G400 MAX and the latest(6.82) beta driver.(any idea why it says 5.82 on Matrox website and 6.82 in About on QuickDesk btw?) I would still use 6.72(5.72?) if it wasn't buggy with a few games out there(MOHAA etc).

Wondering 2 things, can I fix this blue screen halt with g400dhm.sys? (going to try to copy in the miniport driver from the previous version and see if that works(grin). Let you know in a while heh.. And, is there going to be a new driver released soon to fix this?

    Ops

Ok judging from the 16 color 640x480 display I currently have after copying in the DHM from 5.72, I'd say that doesn't work(grrr).. So Matrox, Get me a new driver you punks! =)

(guess I am stuck with re-installing drivers back and forth when I want to play MOHAA or need to view a flick, unless I want to view flicks in 4bit and play pacman

              Deinstall?

Excuse me but what are you talking about? I shouldn't have to uninstall 5.72 to install 5.82. That means I'll have to reboot an extra time.. Or is there a bug in the install program for 5.82?

No, its a standard procedure to avoid problems like those. Uninstall previous drivers, let Windows detect your card as Standard VGA, THEN run Setup.

Edit: This is the general rule, as it works in 98/Me/2k, i dont know whether XP will detect the card as standard VGA or use its built-in drivers.

It will use the builtin drivers for the G400 as it did when I first installed XP I'm sure.
So nobody else is getting these blue-screen crashes when running some mpg/avi etc viewers? It happens for me with realplayer streaming and when I try to view mpeg2 using PowerDVD.

The proper procedure to install updated drivers in XP and 2K is the following:

Goto add/remove programs, select Matrox software. Uninstall the software, reboot. Windows will detect your card, click CANCEL. Once in windows, run the setup.exe. In XP all you have to do is reboot one more time when finished. In 2k, you may have to select add extra dualhead features during the install.

And that's all there is to it.

                      Everybody else follows installation instructions.

maybe an idea to make future Matrox driver installation detect wether a previous installation hasn't been uninstalled yet:

'error 2 - between keyboard and chair: previous powerdesk hasn't been uninstalled yet' - Do you wish to uninstall it right now?

This is not a matrox only thing:

There will always be problems if the old drivers arnt vanquished before you install newer...

And that aplies to almost all HW!!!

Ok I did what you suggested and uninstalled Matrix software, rebooted. Only that XP didn't ask me whether or not to install the G400 driver that comes with XP, it just did it anyway hehe. Well I can't do much about that I guess, so I just ran setup.exe and installed 5.82beta drivers again and rebooted. I still get the blue screen crashes..

You can try uninstalling the drivers, reboot, hit F8 before windows starts to load to get into safe mode. Once in safe mode, remove the G400 from device manager. Reboot again, click cancel once windows detects the G400. Run the setup. Reboot. If this doesn't work, post up some system specs and I am sure we can get this squared.
