Incredibly Slow Format, Disk still OK?

I got a new 60 gig Seagate ATA100 hd for my brother in law.
It took nearly 2 hours to format.
In fact I gave up once & figured the drive was bad.

Is the drive OK? Watching it format was amazing.
Sometimes it would go nearly 5 min to do 1%.

But now, after letting it finish, I ran Norton disk doctor on it.
"Thorough" surface test & all.
It gets a clean bill of health and seems to work just fine.

Should I go ahead & send it to him?

That's about a typical time to reformat/check/verify a new file system.

But why would it take > 5 times a long as the 40gig Seagate he also got?

He didnt do a quick format instead of a full format did he?

With Partmanager you can Partition and format a drive in less than 5 minutes....

Hmmm.....
Well, I copied all the files off of my HD to the new one.
It did ok.
I am running another "Thorough" surface test.
If it passes I will send the drive on to him.

Still a bit of a mistery, but what the heck.
