  • What is this piece of hardware ?

    Hello,

I recently bought a Toshiba DVD drive. Supplied in the box was the drive (duh! ), 2 cd's, an ide-cable, an audio cable (way too short ), 4 screws and a plastic thing.

The plastic thing is about as long as an ide-cable is wide (actually fits over an ide-cable), opens to an angle of about 20-30°, and does not lock when closed.

Does anybody know what I mean ? And what is the purpose of this thing ?

    Thanks !

Maybe something to secure the IDE cable to the drive?

It doesn't attatch to the drive; the cable is secure (well, as secure as any ide-cable to any ide-device can be)...

If you want to keep your case neat, you could fold the cable up and use that sleeve to snug it, eh?

          Oh, that could be possible...
(perhaps I should press harder to lock it... )

Well, hadn't thought of that; the cables are berely long enough as they are (in a LianLi PC70), shorting them never came to mind...

          Thanks!

also maybe it fell off one of the terminal ends of the IDE cable?? Check for missing/not quite right ends?

have ya got a pic of it and the cable ends??

            just a thought...

Oh yeah, a lot of manufacturers put "pull loops" on their plugs, so you don't yank on the cable... maybe it's one of those but it fell off...

                Borhn:
The cable looks normal : 3 connectors, no damage...

                Gurm:
I should try it again, but if I remember correctly, the plastic does not fit around an IDE-connector. (besides: when the cable is connected, the connector is no longer visible, so using this to pull it out would be impossible...

I will attempt to scan in an image of it this evening, perhaps that will clarify things...
