Just noticed that when my tv is on I see some kind of creeping waves on my monitor in 1152*864 @ 85Hz. This didn't occur on my matrox g400 max but it does now with my radeon 8500.
    Thought you'd like to know.

This may sound daft but are you sure you're running at 85hz. Did you get that reading from the monitors osd or from the control panel. If I leave the ATI drivers at the default settings I can set my radeon to run at any refresh rate but it will still pump out a flickery 60hz.
If you are running at 85hz do you have a Trinton monitor?

I can easy see the difference between 60Hz and 85Hz. But I can verify this on my monitor. So I'm sure I run 85Hz.

What type of monitor is it? I know some people have reported this over at rage3d.com but the site has been down for the last few days.
Does it occur at higher refresh rates?
        Has it always done it?
Have you moved the monitor or introduced things like speakers nearby?

          It is a Viewsonic GT775.
I noticed the problem a while after I installed my radeon 8500. Haven't moved anything. I've only noticed it at 1152*864 @ 85Hz so far.

A speaker would induce a constant magnetic field which would not cause this problem.

woel, could this be caused by two monitors affecting each other? ie have the monitor(s) positions been changed... or wiring leading to either be causing this, because I've seen that happen before.

              Uh oh...

Sounds exactly like the problems noted with Radeon based videocards. Does it almost look like "shimmering" or water streaming down/up your screen?
Good luck getting ATI to fix it for you if it is your problem. I heard many bad things about people using higher end trintron tubes with Radeon cards. Problem has been noticed since the first Radeon came out. Funny thing is only certain monitors are affected.

Well it is a 17" monitor with som kind of trinitron. But for now, like I said, this problem only occurs in 1152*864 @ 85Hz...
But I think I also said that this only occurs when the tv that stands about 15" from my monitor is on. This did not occur with my old matrox and maybe it's because the signal is more sensitive on the radeon 8500.
Actually this also happened on my matrox g400 max in any resolution when my tv was on, but only when I've chosed the video in channel and not sending anything out to the tv from the computer.
Now it only occurs when I watch a standard tv channel.
                I prefer the older problem...

I too have seen this same problem with Radeons, Trinitron type monitors and high resolutions (usually higher than 1024x768). I've seen it several times both at work with KDS flat screens, with a friend who has a KDS 17" Radeon 64 combo and also a couple times with large Sony monitors. Basically all Trinitron monitors use Sony tubes, regardless of the brand on the casing. The only solution I know of is what my friend did. He bought a GeForce3 Ti200.

All the time, more or less depending on resolution. 1024x768 is where it is most critical. I can live with it though.

Edit: I have to add that I run it on an Iiyama VM pro451 and that I run 1440x1080@85hz

Hmmm, I don't have this problem with my R8500 and my Iiyama VisionMaster Pro510.
I shortly saw it with my old Radeon, though - but it was fixed with the "FixShimmering" reg-tweak in one of these tweakers (the RaidON Tweaker) - you might want to try this.
