But is it available as a standalone codec? Without "The Playa" (translation - shit media player that craps out a lot and messes up my settings)?

The Pro version that I've got came with 'The Playa 2.0'

I also got the PRO version .... The ad-ware one.

Now I got an Ad-Ware free Pro version .....

Firewall With outbound protection .. prevents the add proggi from connceting to the web and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft .. removes all the crokster shit installed and so far it still works........

and anyone doing DVD 2 DivX check out Doom9 for a nifty guide on how to use the new codec with Gordian Knot

Haven't tried it myself, but from what I hear the ad component in DivX would be Gator - and thus removable using Ad-Aware without hurting the DivX installation.

Actually you have to be careful. There's a discussion about this on the DIVX board itself (their own forum, no less!) and if you aren't careful the encoder won't work.

However, this release is SO DAMN BUGGY that I didn't even bother installing it. After reading through the complaints on their forum I just left well enough alone. I'll wait for 5.1, thanks.

P.S. No, there ISN'T a standalone CODEC, dammit! WHY OH WHY MUST THEY BUNDLE THIS CRAP?

Well .... Ad-Aware does break the installation ... can be fixed with a little patch .. ahem.

The firewall does stop the built in ads.

I haven't seen any crashes yet .. and I have done some DVD 2 DivX 5 and DivX playback.

                Hmmm ....

There seems to be some issues with playback on some systems ... no mine though

The DivX's I encode play fine on my PC but looks .. well weird on others

Yeah, that's basically what everyone is saying - some machines the playback is screwed, and ALL machines the encoding is... weird.

doh, just posted this in Desktop Video...

Haven't had a chance to actually try the encoding, but playback so far seems okay (although had to turn down post-processing from default to 0 on my celeron 466). The Playa and DivX Player 2.0 that comes with 5 are two different players. I believe they built Player from scratch. I haven't had any problems with either so far, and they both play videos much better than WMP on my computer.

What's the latest on this codec? I have a 5.0 clip I want to view on W2K but I simply want to decode with the latest codec w/o installing another player or dealing with ads. Is that too much to ask? Will the DivX 5 bundle (" DivX5Bundle.exe 5.0 2700 KB 2002-3-04 20:06 GMT) provide this?

DivX5Bundle contains the codec and The Player w/o ads. There may be a codec only install over at http://www.doom9.org

After looking in the forums, it seems that if you can get a hold divxdec.ax then you can register it with "regsvr32.exe divxdec.ax" and that should work. Drop me an eMail and I could send it to you if you want.

I figured it was simply a matter of registering the codec but I was hoping to find just the codec available for download. I installed the package and copied the files. I'll try uninstalling the package and registering the codec later after checking out their player. I noticed it hit the versions.divx.com site but presumably only to check for updated versions of the player. Are most of the problems reported by Gurm et.al. related to the player or the codec as well? I wonder if I'll run into clips that require additional functionality only available in the DivX player?
