Old School: configuring jumpers on Aopen FM56-ITU/2 ISA modem

you sure it's a p'n'p modem ? The manual doesn't mention it.
To install a (non-pnp) isa modem on a modernish motherboard . . .
- find the drivers for it (*if* you can't find it, yourself I think I have some that will work for that model)
- configure the jumpers (com4 and irq3's normal)
- physically install the modem
- ditch all the comports you're not already using out of DeviceManager (even com4 if it's there)
-reboot, enter cmos
- disable all the comports you're not using (yes, even com4)
- reserve IRQ3 for ISA
- save&exit
- when windows restarts, use the 'install new modem' thingie, to install your new modem using the drivers.
- in Device Manager check your ports , speed should be 115.200 or 961.200 depending how brave you feel
- etc.

I have one of these very modems, but I havent used it since I got cable, so I forget.
But I do remember one thing. You need to disable the resources in the motherboard bios that you will be using with the modem. If not you will get a conflict. IE, disable com2/irq3 in the bios and then when your windows finds a new com port(com2 hopefully and on irq3) then go and install the modem. Once you get it working it is a very good modem. Fast and reliable. At least mine was. And a jumperable ISA modem uses very little overhead, so it is as lag free and quick as a 56k can be.
Oh and for everyone that pointed out the manual, it is a very poorly translated manual from Korean or Mandarin or something, and almost not worth having. Maybe they have updated it tho, online, but my paper one is next to useless. Maybe for lighting a fire.
best of luckAMD XP2100+, 512megs DDR333, ATI Radeon 8500, some other stuff.

You;'re right, that's what I meant,
physical serial port 1=comports 1 & 3
physical serial port 2=comports 2 & 4
(usually)
By disabling the appropriate one(s) built into the board, you're allowing the OS to pick up the one built into the modem. Assuming your mouse is using serial port 1, you probably wouldn't want to disable that one.
I've been installing/reinstalling so much recently I could almost do it in my sleep. Glad it worked for you, those are pretty good modems, as long as you ignore the typos in the manual.

ps: if you can figger a way to actually force the isp to give you v.90, let me know (since mine added dsl to their services, I connect at 31.2k half the time, gee, wonder why ;-( )
