  • Win2K Network Problem

Not mine Mind you... but one of my clients works for a hospital.

He is commonly in two different locations.

    One uses a Domain (WGH)
The other uses a WorkGroup (RSA)

Now he is wondering if there is an easy way to make it so it will work (Network Wise) in both locations without having to Jump through hoops and drive the IT staff at WGH nuts.

They say it can't be done, and I said I didn't know but would look into it... so here I am looking into it..

Anyone know how to set it up, or if its even possible?

You're only real bet is to use hardware profiles. I've never tried that before, or heard of anyone trying. Don't know if you can be that specific with profiles.

Technically, he shouldn't have to constantly switch between domain and workgroup in Win2k. At the most, he should have to put in a static IP at the workgroup office. Win2k should detect that there is no domain controller available at the workgroup location and disable the domain functionality. I have not had problems bouncing a domain migrated Win2k laptop between a domain and workgroup network in the past.

I say keep it migrated to the domain. When he is at the workgroup place, he can still log in to the domain account (unless there are severe restrictions on the account) and run it on the workgroup. I do it all the time. As long as his password doesn't expire on the road...

Ok, I think I follow you.

I think I may have to have a look at his laptop to get a feel for what these IT professionals at the WGH have setup.

(They are the people who couldn't get an MS USB Internet Keyboard to work properly on a laptop...)

I will probably have to get a better dialogue going between us to establish how its set up now and why it is that he is running into problems.

Then I will post more information.
